Energy Efficiency of HGTV Green Home
We’re leaking a detail today. Or, rather, the Super Fan is. She’s spilling the beans about the energy efficiency of this year’s Green Home. I think you will be impressed. More earth-friendly details to come in April.

~ WAITING FOR MORE PHOTO'S & UPDATES ON THE 2010 GREEN HOME !….AS I STATED BEFORE ON PREVIOUS BLOG 'S… "I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS GREEN HOME"….LOCATION, DESIGN, LANDSCAPING, PAVERS, DECKING, WHITE COLOR, PINETREES, & SO MUCH MORE…I'LL BE
THINKING & DREAMMING GREEN …..CAN NOT WAIT TO TOUR THIS HOME, AS I AM A NEW ENGLANDER…LOVE MY CHANGE OF SEASONS…. ~THANKS HGTV FOR GIVING US THIS DREAM!
From a June 25, 2008 online article by Kathryn Koch, here's some info about the recently opened grocery store in Pinehills, aptly called The Market. Read on, and you'll see why it fits in perfectly with the Pinehills Community lifestyle.
According to Michael Szathmary, The Market's managing director, "Full-service cheese, deli, meat and seafood departments will complement a bake shop, a seasonal and locally grown produce department (through an arrangement with the Southeastern Massachusetts Agricultural Partnership), a prepared-food section, salad bar, dairy and frozen foods, chef’s cove, a floral department and aisles of groceries to be sold at everyday prices."
(con't)
"The Market will go green in several aspects," Szathmary said. "A ceiling fan with a 20-foot span for climate control will help save energy, a new BIO-EZ stainless steel machine with an augur will turn organic waste into a liquid that can be disposed of through the sewer system to reduce waste, a compressor water heater will generate hot water, special LED bulbs are being used for efficiency, and three different kinds of bags made of recyclable materials will be available for shoppers."
Oh how I envy those lucky Pinehills and Plymouth area residents, and of course, even the next Green Home winner, who get to shop there.
Live Lean and Go Green—at the The Market!
Love it! It was hard to imagine what a Vrachfiet would look like, but I finally found the webpage with the article and photo. That lime green cargo cover really makes it cool looking. Perfect for tight, dense urban areas, and short distances. Not sure how it would do on the Interstates here in the USA (I don't think I could peddle that fast!), but even some of our more compact, traffic-bottlenecked big cities could benefit from this type of small, non-polluting goods and furnishings hauler.
Interesting find, reneelovesgreen, and fun reading.
Thanks Coop…. Oops…. forgot to add the website!! Knew that you could find it!!!!
You know that never has one home made every blogger happy….. so, I am ready… and I could easily fit our small family in that beautiful home!!! I just don't know if I would enjoy those heavy winters… I would enjoy it for Thanksgiving and Christmas.. but, I love warm weather.. The location is absolutely interesting and would love to have a picnic on the beach!!
That is awesome!!! I would love to ride the bikes to pick up groceries and a coffee!! Now, this is the "right" way of thinking!!
within the picket fence looks as though it would be the owners responsiblilty – outside the fence, the common areas, are maintained by the neighborhood
It is a four season location – cooling is only an issue about 1 month of the year – like the thought of warm climates this time of year………..
You're absolutely right, reneelovesgreen. How perfect would that be to cruise around the Pinehills Community in your very own electric/solar/or pedal powered Vrachfiet—picking up groceries and supplies here and there, and of course stopping for a coffee or bite to eat at the cafe. Ideal!!!
Pick me, pick me, HGTV! I volunteer! If not to win the Green Home, then to start my own Pinehills Grocery and Supplies home delivery service with a whole fleet of Vrachfiets! (During those cold winter days, I'll supervise—taking online or phone orders, and scheduling routes from the comfort of my Green Home—while Show Me makes the deliveries.
That's what I was thinking. The first Green Home yard was maintained by the HOA.
The blog site and the web site should indicate when the green home sweepstakes open.
marian, go to the Feb 9 blog thread titled "A Peek Inside HGTV Green Home 2010." Senior editor MARY's commentary below the photo answers your question about the date when the sweepstakes opens.
HEY Lessie are you excited aren't these guys hilarious I think I will have to keep blogging I am really getting addicted to these blogs SeeYa at GH BLOG
you don't have to live there to shop there……..
You're right BBSteve, and that means I'll have to add a few electric or gas/electric hybrid vans to my fleet of Pinehills and Plymouth area grocery and supplies Vrachfiet vehicle delivery fleet. (…that may be easy for YOU to say!)
Now, I'll have to come up with a company name that's a little easier to pronounce…. (I first thought of "The Pinehills Pedal Pushers", but that brings up a whole different image!
Remember, Plymouth Rocks!
Thank you so much! This weekend Ill be taking a stroll… Snow or shine… Most likely snow
With all of the new products and incentives, implementing renewable energy or energy efficiency is getting more and more complicated. I am thinking about installing a solar water system in my house and have had trouble navigating all of the tax credits. Here is a great article with some good resources for these problems as well as some simpler solutions to saving you money. http://thegreenertruth.com/2010/02/personal-renew…
Wow, 40% more efficient!! How exciting. Solar, tankless water heater, thicker better insulated windows and walls. I'd give my eyeteeth for any of those. I'm assuming more windows face the south too. Is there some sort of water recycling plant in the house? I didn't see a wind generator, being close to the ocean, could there be a small wind generator that we haven't seen yet?
It starts April 16th
41% more efficient!!! I can't wait to hear about the green features!
Happy to see HGTV help spread the word about LEED and educate the public on this program. I must say I have been waiting for HGTV to help educate the public about "interior design" versus "interior decoration". I realize it may not be part of HGTV's mission but I really believe it would be of great to help to both the "interior design" and the "interior decoration" industry and provide the public with valuable information when it comes to selecting the professional they need to complete a given project. I now see shows on HGTV where a qualified professional comes fix the mistakes of a previous ""professional"". Don't you wonder why so many of these projects ended up the way they did? Well, the answer is very simply, the public does not realize that the design industry (interior design, architecture, landscape architecture, construction, etc.) is regulated in many states and each state has valuable tools available to the public to make sure the professional they plan on working with is actually qualified. In the long run, this saves the public time, money, frustration and provides them with the peace of mind to know that a qualified design professional has their safety and well-being in mind. At any rate, just my thoughts. Kudos on pursuing LEED certification on this project and interior design vs. interior decoration set aside, I love many of HGTV's shows for the entertainment they provide. Too bad for the missed opportunity to educate the public in the process.
Does 41% mean 41% less in monthly bills too?
Hope there is a money prize as well that can be used for the attorneys' fees, closing costs and taxes – then there are movig expenses, turning on utilities, etc….. ,I sincerely hope so.
41% more efficient!!! I can't wait to hear about the green features!
Does it have a greywater system?
Is it made of sustainable/recycled materials as well as being energy efficient?
Does it take advantage of passive solar gain?
Is it south facing?
Is it in a community where other people have homes that are comparable? Are the people living there also living environmentally conscious lifestyle?
Just curious about all this, Thank you!! I hope people will learn a lot and be compelled to make changes by this new dream home phase!
Where are the Marxh 2010 finishing touches pictures?
This is my first time blogging. I always enjoy reading the questions and answers since I had no idea what i was doing. I love this home the stone chimney is beautiful. I cant complain about the windows either! I just love sunlight throughout a home! Cant wait until the entering time begins! Good Luck Everyone!
The photos won't be up until the big reveal show right? I can't wait to see this house. The exterior is beautiful!
I am curious just how "green" this house will be. I remember last years house and the amount of light fixtures they had inside, there were enough to light a ball park, and the fact that they had ceiling fans installed on the exterior porch. I'm no rocket scientist but electrically powered fans on the exterior of the house is not my idea of green. So I am very curios to see there idea of "green".
uhh….who is Gail?? I see several people here thanking her, but the woman in the video posts as Mary, and I don't see a Gail listed among the commenters.
Hey Ernie, are you going to build those to sell? I want one. The cats here like to get up high because it's warmer, and they can get away from the dogs, and, probably most important is that they can watch everything going on in the room.
Gail whats the square footage of the master bedroom? And the kitchen? My 2 favorite rooms of a home.
What Leed Certification rating does this Green home have? i don't understand what people are saying about the bath water. can you explain?
where do you sign up to win?
Hey,I’m a little confused. I have been following the construction of the new green home in Plymouth with it’s beautiful old fashioned cottage style and wonderfully lush surroundings in the community where it is being built. The confusion is that when I just took a virtual tour for the house in the sweepstakes it seems to be another property in Plymouth. Could you clear that up for me; it would be very much appreciated.
thank you
MV
The tour you saw was for the 2009 home. They have not posted the 2010 home yet.
You cannot yet. You will see it on green home central when you can.
Gail is the woman in the video. Mary posts them on her behalf.
Gail it sorta seems like there is only two bedrooms do u kno different:?
This is a perfect green home it remind me of one of the dream home that was built a few years ago it is perfect I wish I could afford to have this home built for my husband and I all the green part they have put in is so wonderful it is a good size home to keep up I love the painted wood and the tower I could live in it for ever.
Will there be a grid underneath the driveway and grass so that it can collect rainwater & reuse it?
Will there ever be any considerations on building an Asian style home? There is so much that you can do with a house like that as well that is also, "green."
And finally, why did the company choose to go with a large truck and not a car that gets excellent mpg's for the green home?
Gail are there putting in a windmill or solor panels thank you.ps i love all the wood and the white ceiling in the kitchen and the red counter also makes the room stand out. great job
Clearly you're not from the area, so I'll explain. We had three weeks of warm weather in New England last summer. The bigger concern here is heat — not cooling. Most homes here don't have central air conditioning. They use window units. And the farther north you get or closer to the coast the cooler it is in summer.
Gail,
I am so happy for you. This has to be one fabulous job. I have been considering a move to another state for some years. New Mexico was one because it was my first home as a child. Massachusetts was another because I read it was one of the best areas to live. Even better it has hockey. Go Bruins! Although I can't travel much right now, it is as though I get to see these places I'm interested in through you. Thanks so much. And, interesting how it's working, huh?
Our home is very energy inefficient. This year we remodel. I am so looking forward to finally getting energy efficient. All these details really help. Thanks again.
A couple of questions …Is the community by and large very energy efficient? Are there established programs for helping the community as a whole become more energy efficient?
Gail,
Funnily enough just as I was checking out this blog my power went out.
Anyway…What would the neighbors like the new home owners to know about energy efficiency in their community?…and how they would like the new owners to contribute?
I love, love, love this Green Sanctuary!!!! It will undoubtedly take the cake when the home design is finished!!!
I can hardly wait to see ~ I love everything about the location, and the walking distance and short drives to fantastic places.
I love that education and medical centers abound… and are all top shelf.
My questions??? Ummm… I'm taking it all in day by day, so… I'll read and listen and hope real hard
that it is my home someday soon… Peace.
i would think that air qulity in a green home would be a must what has been done to address this
I am so happy they made this green home smaller. I can see myself living there and enjoying the coast. I have been too far away from my family. I pray this is the home I can call my own! Its closer to my family and closer to where I was born. I can not believe how home sick I am after seeing this beautiful green home. I have been entering this contest for as long as it has been on the air. This will truly be a blessing for me! I hope you will built more greener homes in the future as well. This is also the first time (with this green home) I have blogged. What an experience! I didnt know how easy it was to do. Thank you!
I need to correct something I said 1 day ago. I said this green home was the first time I blogged. Actually the dream home 2010 is when I started to blog. I loved the dream home a lot but honestly I prefer smaller cozy homes like the new 2010 green home. I have always been an naturalist and tried to go organiic as much as I can. My dream is to have a green home where I can have my own organic garden.
