Your HGTV Green Home Questions Answered

Thanks for posting your questions and being patient as we gear up for the online tour of HGTV Green Home 2010. Some queries we cannot answer at this time without giving too much detail away.

Q. Does HGTV Green Home 2010 have a basement?
-Ernie
A. Yes, indeed. The home features a very large unfinished basement.

Q. Can the basement or tower accommodate a bedroom?
-Char
A. The basement is designated for the mechanical area and storage in this home and is not considered living space. The tower is probably a little small to double as a bedroom, but someone could certainly lounge there and enjoy a nap.

Q. What was Linda’s inspiration in decorating this home?
-LynnCoggin
A. Interior designer Linda Woodrum took her inspiration from traditional cottage style and added her own funky, modern twist. A recurring theme of circles and squares can also be found throughout the house.

Q. When will GH2010 tours likely be starting up in Plymouth?
-BBSteve
A. Tours will begin in mid-April. Check back for specific dates and times soon!

Q. When can we start entering for the contest?
-barbara crotzer
A. The giveaway entry period begins on April 16 at 9 a.m. ET.

Q. How large is the master tub?
-Ernie
A. The soaking tub in the master bathroom measures approximately 2 feet deep by 4 feet long.

Q. I would like to know about the fireplace. Is it wood burning with a gas starter or what?
-Linda
A. The living room features a gas fireplace by Rinnai.

  1. This year’s home is a real disappointment. Two BR? You have to be kidding. The kitchen counter and glass tile clash so bad. How about a walk-in pantry guys? Need room for those bread makers, pasta makers, crock pots, etc.The bathrooms are sad, as well as the closets. The outside areas are fantastic.

  2. I wish you would have included the basement on your virtual tour. Will you be showing that space in the future? Is the garage a two car or a one car and how big is the lot?

Frances on April 2, 2010 at 3:25 am
  3. Is it against the rules to send in US mail entries if I will also be entering online? It says you can enter by US mail as often as you wish. Does this mean in addition to an online entry per day? I'm so excited!

  4. Hello! so I'm new to the blogging for HGTV Green Home, but I'm here to stay, until my hubby and I win! ;D

I'm glad we aren't the only ones to notice the lack of bedrooms… I guess we could always finish the basement, but are we the only ones that noticed (or perhaps missed) the powder room for the 1st floor? :/ How are we supposed to "entertain" guests if there's no powder room on the first floor? I'm a bit concerned about that too… are my hubby and I wrong? I hope so…

rebelada on April 5, 2010 at 3:00 am
  5. Rebelada, there is a powder room on the first floor. It's between the hallway and the laundry room, just behind the kitchen pantry. You can see a peak into it, with a view of the sink only, from the hallway pictures. They don't actually tour the powder room, but it is there!

knjmom on April 5, 2010 at 6:07 am
  6. I agree. I love the first floor. The second floor would be problematic for us, with 2 teenage sons. Even if you can finish off the basement and use it for a third bedroom, the second floor "kids room" does not have a closet and the room looks really small for more than just a couple of visiting grandkids. Beautiful house, beautiful neighborhood, beautiful location, but the house would probably be best suited for a retired couple. Sadly, my husband and I are many moons away from that just yet.
Now, with that said, if we were blessed enough to win this house, we'd move there in a heartbeat and just make it work. Where there's a will, there's a way!

  7. YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OK now I can be happier! :)

I thought that the lack of bedrooms was a bad enough choice, so I panicked at the thought of there being no powder room for everyday living and guests. HAHA Thanks for replying, I kept staring at the layout in disbelief because they don't show it there..

rebelada on April 5, 2010 at 3:40 pm
  8. Is there a backyard and how close is the street to the green home? I did not notice a street close by nor the back of the house during the virtual tour.

Nikki on April 6, 2010 at 12:02 pm
  9. how large is the property? Where does the door right next to the fridge go. Can we see the back yard, is there room for our thermo spa hot tub and/or a greenhouse?

Deborah on April 6, 2010 at 3:23 pm
  10. I do not understand putting a tower area with no half bath. All the bathrooms on the second floor appear cosseted. So I guess you go to the first floor and then back up again?

  11. Also, everyone, these are some excellent questions. Questions that I would ask myself. Thank you for bringing them up.

Karen Las Cruces on April 8, 2010 at 5:04 am
  12. I wonder also about questions involving the selection criteria and about how many times per day is allowed to enter by mail. And – Please clarify whether a credit check is required or just a criminal background check.

I was widowed young with a child still at home with very little life insurance. This happened in 2004. Because I never had the opportunity to attend college and become a professional I decided to do so and to forgo taking care of all the bad debt (insurance portion remaining). The estate went through the normal probate in my small town but left some of my husband's hospital bills out in the cold.

Not owning our own home or having real property at the time he died and with a very small life insurance policy – I was unable to meet many of the remainder of the 80/20. Needless to say being unemployed and in an economically depressed area in normal times meant that going to school was probably the most smart investment I could make; however, five years in college has left me with opportunity for a good future (getting an MA in Liberal Arts in four weeks) but with poor credit. Please advise how you weed out those who would not be good for the honor of having one of your homes.

  13. Who is the manufacturer of the chairs in the dining room and where can they be purchased? Robyn

Robyn on April 8, 2010 at 9:28 pm
  14. i don't want to put a damper on things but do remember the 30% tax the government will bill you if you win.

kimberly on April 12, 2010 at 5:31 pm
  15. yeah doesn't seem right to make it a 2 bedroom house. who builds 2 bedroom houses anymore?

kimberly on April 12, 2010 at 5:26 pm
  16. why isn't there a microwave in the kitchen?

Cynthia on April 13, 2010 at 2:49 pm
  17. I think it is beautiful and green…but why don't you folks use the money to build less lavish and do 2 homes for a change..you seem to want a blockbuster that most folks can't afford if they win it!!

Jan Williams on April 14, 2010 at 11:56 pm
  18. HOW MUCH OF UR OWN MONEY WILL IT TAKE 2 LIVE IN THIS HOUSE,, TAXES,AN ANY THING ELSE

  19. Was white paint the only color thay had???? The wood work should all be natural, Oak or hickory,or maybe maple… white all over is boring….

  20. I absolutely LOVE this house and its smaller design. I’m a fan of Sarah Suzanka’s (sp?), “not so big house” concept and the HGTV Green House fits the bill. Kids can share a bedroom, and honestly, who wants to be slave to cleaning their house on the weekends……..I don’t! Lovely house, lovely landscape, lovely design!

  23. I love this home!!! I am concerned about not having a third bedroom though. Sorry I am not trying to be a downer . Does anyone know if there is an area to make a small bedroom?

HZL on April 19, 2010 at 3:22 pm
  24. HGTV is just about the only program I ever watch. Have toured the 2010 Green Home a number of times in addition to seeing the tour on t.v. Was just wondering why there is no pantry in the kitchen. Even, as a single person, I feel as though I really need a pantry. The kitchen did not appear to have a large number of cabinets.

Linda on April 20, 2010 at 4:26 pm
  25. I would like to see some pictures or maybe a little video of the basement. Any chance of that?

Ozzie on April 20, 2010 at 10:00 pm
  26. Just wondered about no closet in kids room. Anyone know why there seems to not be one??

  28. There is an open closet in the hall leading to the bathroom. Before the sink is a place to hang clothes also some cubby cubes for storage. If not enough you have to bring or purchase a wardrobe.

  29. Where does one accomodate guests in this house?

Robrt Boles on April 24, 2010 at 9:56 am
  30. I love the wrap around porch, the outdoor kitchen, and grounds. However, I noticed that with a number of HGTV homes, the homes do not allow for handicap/disability access. Also, impractical is the lack of a bathroom on the main floor for guests, or for when you are busy in the Kitchen or laundry (or rushing home), and bedrooms only on the 2nd floor..which again, leaves out options for disabled family or guests. You design the home for entertaining, but what do your guests do when needing to visit the bathroom ? Rummage through your private master suite ? Be left alone going through your child's room ? Not good HGTV.

itmaiden on April 25, 2010 at 5:58 pm
  31. Is the basement constructed strictly for storage..or can it be up-graded for additional living space..ie: an additional kitchenette and bathroom? Add a pool-table? Can the basement be accessed from the outdoors?

  32. Needing a home, we put our vacation dreams on hold to search for the perfect house. As we search we plan ways we will green a little old house when we finally find it. So I have been avidly following this site to learn all I can. The more I see of the HGTV green home, the more I love it. I love the home! I love all the pictures and all the words about it, it is sooooo wonderful and helpful. I love the green info, and the blogs. But now you have gone and whetted my dreaming for a vacation. You are rocking the house dreams.

  33. If the taxes adn HOA dues get too high, does anayone know if there is any reason you wouldn't be able to do a reverse mortgage? If I were to win, I wouldn't want to have to lose it.

nansue on May 2, 2010 at 6:12 pm
  34. For all the people talking about a third bedroom, I would think you could use the tower and make a very casual bedroom, it'd be small, but think how much fun a kid would have using that for a bedroom.

nansue on May 2, 2010 at 6:15 pm
  35. There IS a pantry, it is to the left of the fridge. Also there IS a bathroom on the first floor too, it's just off the hall that leads to the garage and the laundry room. Happy to help!

  36. I viewed the home with my wife on Sunday, was disappointed in not being able to view the basement and it's inner workings. We both loved the Great Room/kitchen/dining area. we question why the 1/2 bath did not have a pocket door? we are planning on building a small home for retirement and was impressed wit the HGTV Green home, where can we find pricing on the Green Elements of the home?

Dave on May 11, 2010 at 3:35 pm
  37. Is the house adaptable for an elevator should the need arise?

erl on May 16, 2010 at 8:20 am
  38. I can't figure out how to ask Mary a question. Just curious about the door in the laundry room, is it a coat closet or storage closet?

bebobinbetty on May 17, 2010 at 7:01 pm
  39. I would use the basement for my craft room plus with a sofa sleeper and ample room for the grandkids to play downstairs on a rainy day. Plus my husband's love a trains.
And I would have my computer / office up in the tower. That would be so peaceful up there

bebobinbetty on May 17, 2010 at 7:07 pm
  40. Is there "insulation" between the interior walls inside the HGTV green house?
