Tidbits About the Basement
Good day, bloggers.
You guys keep me busy – I eat, sleep and investigate all things HGTV Green Home these days. I even had a dream last night that my husband and I opened a store called “Refills.” The store featured four aisles stocked with lotion- and detergent-filled barrels. Consumers brought in and filled their own bottles. Just think of all the containers this concept would save. I guess you could say I am obsessed with recycling!
Here are answers to some of your questions:
•The basement is a full-size (not just a crawl) space, with eight-foot ceilings and three windows. It mirrors the square footage of the first floor (about 1,000 square feet). The basement houses the home’s mechanical systems, so about 480 square feet could be used for other purposes.
•Interior designer Linda Woodrum chose the cotton-linen Number Pillow for the living room sofa as a way to celebrate HGTV’s third Green Home.
•HGTV Green Home is built on a 5,013-square-foot, or basically a 50′ x 100′, lot.
•There is no chute that connects the second floor to the laundry room. But I love that idea and will mention it to Linda and Jack. Who knows, they may incorporate the concept into next year’s plan!
Your Super Fan,
Gail

Are there provisions for roll-up fire ladder from the tower room? Sprinklers in ceiling?
If buyer decides to construct guest bedrooms in basement, is there a bathroom down there, or the possibility of connecting to sewer? Getting water to fixtures is a simple matter.
Dear Gail.
Thanks for your prompt answer. Yes it is a good idea that HGTV is doing the houses more affordables and greener.
It is very nice having you near us answering our questions. Thanks again.
Best Regards.

Hi:
I found this web page about Contest and Sweepstakes and there is information about taxes in prizes.

Hi:

OKguest – I understand the federal taxes will be $250K and I'm not sure what the Massachusetts taxes will be – The $100K won't touch that and I don't know too many people who can come up with the $250K much less the extra state tax. I suspect most people who win these houses have to sell them.
Great pics. Especially liked seeing the basement window!
It's the next best thing to Heaven, since I'm adoptingmy 17 month old grandson and I am orginally from Maine and have family here, moving my hubby and my grandson back East would be such a wonderful gift. The country and the town and people have so much to offer, and it would be the only way I could ever get back home to live, like I said it's the next best thing to Heaven;)
I'd put the w/d in the master bathroom. Most of the laundry is generated from the bedrooms, hence the relocation!
This truly is my dream home! I love everything about it. A lot of detailing and planning went into this beautiful home. I would be so blessed to win this. Thank you all for the opportunity.

How much is the cost of association fees ? & what is included in them?
What type of heating system does the green home have and also for hot water besides the solar panels of the tower roof? We love this home and can imagine us living in it.. Thank you HGTV for giving all of us who enter daily a chance to become the proud owners of such a wonderful home, perfect in everyway.
Marie what is you website – I have lots of old wrapping paper and lots and lots of gift bags. I am in the mood to do something!!!
this green home is perfect for my little family of 4 i have to daughters and my husband and i were thinking of leaving ny but dont want to b too far from our family so this is a perfect location its not huge so maintaining it wont be a problem and it would be the perfect birthday gift since the winner is announced on my birthday. i envision my family in this house every day!
I love Gail's idea for a "Refills" store. Tweek it and franchise it!
Hi, I don't remember seeing what type of central heating system the Green 2010 home has and if it does have central air. Also, there was mention of a park for all(the future homeowners) to share. Am I correct then, that there is a monthly groundskeeper fee? Thanks, Pauline
I can handle the idea of two bedrooms, BUT the smaller bedroom is only good for young children. However, young children have a bad habit of growing larger. The room has NO Closet and clothes are a big issue with teenagers. Also, what if the winner has no young children. Again, the room is just too small and basically unusable outside of young children
Its a good thing that there is a basement, many potential winning families would need more then the 2 bedrooms. If you could add 2 or 3 more bedrooms in the basement with a full bath, that would be great. (if the septic can take it) It would have been smarter and more practical if the builders/designers had just added another bedroom. There seems to be room above the garage to continue the 2nd floor. I would not even be able to use it being that my family has more then 2 kids. As much as I would love to win a home, this is too small. Hopefully someone who can really use it wins it.
Tell us about the garage. That is another area not photographed. Also I would like to go and view the home in person. Are there tours available?
Hi David !!! I am very late viewing all your great pic's. I really appreciate all the wonderful inforation and pic's….this is awesome !!! THANKS AGAIN, Zoie
hey gail, is it true no children under 18 is allowed. what if a family won!!!!!!!!! with only one child, the kids bedroom don't look like it's for an 18 year old! it is a great home. please reply?
THAT'S GREAT INFO ABOUT THE BASEMENT BECAUSE THAT SMALL SPACE CAN BE USED FOR ALOT OF THINGS IF FIXED RIGHT JUST OVERNIGHT STAY FOR GUESTS. WHY DON"T THEY SHOW IT? I WANT THIS I WOULD B WITH MY FAMILY AGAIN!
OMG…… This would be a dream come true! This would come at a perfect time in my life. I lived in RI and worked in MA I moved to FL thinking that it would be the best change in my life at that time, Not the best move. We Miss our family.
I had recently started thinking of moving back but without a place to go live and money is very tight it just seems impossible only until I saw this house and the location it would be like winning the lottery for me and my family. I have faith that this could actually become a reality.
I found it! A picture of the cellar!!
:):)
It's here:http://www.hgtvpro.com/hpro/photo_template/articl…
I see it is built in 3 sections: one under the house, one under the garage, one under the porch(?)
It appears only the section under the house is accessible to home owner. I suspect the other two sections are filled with sand (or something) and will serve as foundation only. Am I correct???
I totally agree !!!! HGTV gives the winner the chance to use the space in a way that fits their lifestyle and needs……..Thanks HGTV for giving me the opportunity to own this beautiful green house !!!!!
Is there any way to close off the top, tower floor during the winter so we are not wasting heat? Also, is there a way to turn the "Kids" room into an extra bedroom with furniture for adults and what is the square footage of that room? I think the room in the basement could be made, the left over room, into a teen's space, room or even a game room, but insulation would have to added due to the noise from the 'mechanical systems'? Thanks, I'm so excited and I'm from the PNW, an area that never appears to even be in the draw, let alone listed in the "What area do you think the Winner will hail from?" I am going to win this house as I am in need of a home, badly. Has anyone in NEED of a home ever won? How many have been able to actually move in and how many of all these homes have had to sell due to taxes, etc.?
Thank you Gail for the info on the basement, at first I didn't know whether it had one, but I was hoping all along. Could possibly put a small bedroom in there, sofa bed or futon. I agree that as cute as the kids bedroom is, it would not be very functional to most families. It would be great for my grandchildren when they would come to visit. Over all the house is fantastic with the stylish furnishings and decorating. It is also in an area that I would love to live in. I saw the pics of the town, with it's charm and I could definitely visualize living there and enjoying the surroundings.
i would never sell one of these to-die-for homes, because i couldn't pay the taxes….. seriously, even on a million dollar home the taxes may average about 10 to 15 grand a year. so…….. we go to work, pay the taxes, and have some gravy left over. i just don't think it's the dream homes purpose, to be a place one moves into and then one sits around waiting for the house to pay all the bills?
That would have been fun, I wanted to know about if the basement is finished and furnished???
This home is lovely in so many ways. The people that will have this home will be blessed. I am confident that a home like this will be loved for many years, and memories will be made here.
I can imagine myself living here and happy every day of my life. Marcy
My granddaughter received the number 2 pillow for her second birthday. What a great idea for a pile of birthday pillow for a children's room~
same here! Love the owl prints and would like to know…where can these be purchased?! Thanks!
Thankyou HGTV and sponsors for waterproofing the foundation !!!!! A waterproofing membrane product (with a 10 year warranty ) was applied to prevent moisture penetration and the potential for mold growth in the lower level of the "green" home……. Hats off to you HGTV for all your hard work "from the bottom up" !!!!!
My husband and I would love this home to retire in, we just love New England climate and especially Plymouth! What a dream come true it would be for us! Hopefully, whomever wins this home can enjoy it for many years!
thats so sweet!
http://www.basementsottawa.com does really nice basement design and finishing in Gatineau. You guys should check their pictures out for ideas.
Do you want us to pay HGTV $1.00 each time we enter their contests? Then they give it to the winner? Won't the winner have to pay taxes on that money? Or should we send it to a bank account for the WINNER that only they can get to?

OK
Nice look SuperFan Gail!
