Meet the Winner of HGTV Green Home 2010
Sandra Gilson from Scotia, N.Y., is the lucky winner of our eco-friendly cottage in Plymouth, Mass.
Sandra, a former New York State Tax Department employee, and her husband, Kermit, a retired science and math teacher, entered the HGTV Green Home 2010 Giveaway every day. The couple will use the cash prize to cover healthcare expenses, and they look forward to entertaining neighbors, friends and family in their new home and plan to share their good fortune with others. They cited the observation tower, porch (reminds them of the “good old days”) and kitchen as their three favorite HGTV Green Home spaces.
The Gilsons are big gardeners, so I suspect their Pinehills neighbors will see them outside, planting big ol’ veggie and container gardens in the near future.

OK, we do not go on vacations very often. So as mentioned before, I am using the "list' method. It is helping a lot, but it is only as good as the "lister" (me) lol.
So anyone have a helpful hint of what to include – that may not always be so obvious to the inexperienced (again, that's me) vacationer?

Hi Nancy!!!!! I think I had posted that too.. I didn't know that we shouldn't after the winner was announced.. whoops!!!! I am sorry… We love you here Nancy and you cannot leave us just because of words.. We Do all have different personalities and that's the Beauty of this blog!!!!! I think we are like brother and sisters, which says that we will always have our opinions and our own beliefs which we will not always get along, but it works just the same!!!!! So think about us not having Nancy before you decide to leave us….. We love you….I think that we will never get along perfectly, but thats ok… I love eveyone on this blog…. Good Morning everyone! Wanitas now you are going to have us attacking the UPS guy each time he rolls in with his truck thinking that Carrie's Art work is on there.. At least you are keeping our spirits up with HOPING AND DREAMING.. I guess I can rule out being a senator with my comments lately, I just wanted to do the pros and cons on the subject is all and that is what is fun about this blog we are ALL different and that is why they call these Intensedebate..So no word on Carrie's Artwork nor clues for the next location? I wish they would start soon..Happy 4th! When I found out I didn't win, I changed my internet account to Small Business so I could earn a living with my computer and maybe be able to buy a home of my own someday. Then before I could get on the blog and tell everyone what I was doing, my ISP cancelled my residential account and today is my last day before they cancel my computer security until I receive the software in the mail on July 9th. They are letting me use my free email accounts, so I am now logged in as edith0168.

I didn't speak to HGTV about that-Nancy did. I agree with Hrsh10-the Gilson's look old enough to apply for a reverse mortgage, and probably qualify to pay less taxes than a working couple because they are retired. They would probably owe less than $250,000 the first year, but I don't know exactly how much. A working single person would owe $296,000. If they own their present home, they can sell it and apply the money toward the taxes. They could use the equity in the GH to pay anything else they owe. With the reverse mortgage, the house would be paying them for the rest of their life. Notice that Sandra said she would use the $100,000 toward their medical bills and didn't mention a mortgage payment?That suggests to me that she owns the house. She used to work for the New York Tax Dept., so I'm sure she has all the angles figured out and can get by without our help. That's why I am going to wait to see if the Gilson's decide to stay before I send anything. You can send something if you want to, But I don't think it will be necessary.
hey Edith! thats fine, you do whatever you feel like doing. i hope these people truly CAN keep this home and if what you say is true, then that would be wonderful. i would still like to send something for the reasons i stated above. like a housewarming gift/blessing. sorry for the mix up with the info.

at the end of the day all i wish for is the best for the winners of these sweeps since we all put so much of ourselves into them. i just feel badly that you got so offended by what i said. i was not trying to say anything negative about you or fight with you. i just had noticed in the past that we seemed to have disagreed on this subject before and commented to that effect. i don't like fighting with people and hold no bad feelings towards you. and for the record the second part of that particular post was not directed at anyone. it was an open expression to anyone that read it. i hope that when you return that there is no hard feelings because i never intended to "get on your case" i was trying to state my feeling and opinions. and if i felt that we were in disagreement when we were in fact not… than i wholeheartedly apologize. i think that in yours and Nancy's fight, i believed you were arguing with her ideas in which i shared some of the same opinions, so that may be where i thought WE were in disagreement. again if i was wrong im sorry i wasn't trying to fight with you or anyone else, just sharing an opinion.

i am happy for the couple!! but they already had a home there is people out there that are homeless and still renting i think that HGTV should consider that. they should research before they give a home
Congratulations to the winners! I have to say just how jealous I am! I live not far in the middle of Cape Cod, And have wanted to live in Plymouth for a long time. My daughter and I have been struggling for some time, I go to the local college, and jsut got a retail job after 1 1/2 years looking. I have to read more about this lovely couple, do they have children to leave all this to when they pass away? Grandchildren to stay in the kids room? I really hope so, so that the home can be used to it's full potential. I can't apply to the other Green Home or Dream Home giveaways unless they are that close to Cape Cod, at least not for a long time as if I am to have any chance at raising my daughter I have to finish college, I suppose I could transfer but, I doubt I will ever win something like this in my lifetime. Even with dedicating my life to help others. I am definitely happy that a man who was a teacher gets to live there, teachers work hard at their jobs, working with teenagers can't be easy. So, after their long lives they deserve something nice, and a nice place to spend the end of it. I hope they live a lot longer so they can enjoy it as long as someone young like me and the thousands of other homeless youth and poor in America would. I can tell from their home that they will keep it clean, and I hope that they treasure it! CONGRATULATIONS, I hope you did the smart thing and used the cash to pay the taxes on your winnings lmao, I hear they charge a lot of this kind of thing, and it's against the rules to sell the car.
