Good afternoon, bloggers.
I love your enthusiasm for this year’s HGTV Green Home and how supportive you are of each other. We will all have fun celebrating, no matter who is selected as the lucky winner. On a side note, I wish I could drop clues about HGTV Dream Home 2011. However, HGTV and Mary WISELY keep me in the dark. For some reason, they seem to think that I might tell you! Imagine that.
Now, on to your questions.
Q. What is the size of the laundry room?
A. The laundry/mudroom area is a little more than 100 square feet in size.
Q. I want to know where the master toilet is?
A. I love this question! As you can imagine, the TV special doesn’t really go into “detail” about the toilet location. The toilet in the master bathroom is located in its own dedicated water closet. I’ve attached a photo.

Q. With all the rain and flooding in Eastern Massachusetts this spring, how did HGTV Green Home 2011 fare? Any water in the basement or pooling in the yard or neighborhood?
A. Fortunately, the heavy rains this spring were not a problem. The Pinehills homes are built on mostly sand, with positive drainage away from the home, and the home’s foundation walls are sealed with a waterproof membrane.
Q. What is the room with the glass door right next to the fridge in the kitchen? Is that a pantry?
A. Yes, that glass door opens to a small pantry in the kitchen. The pantry features an etched glass door. It is really charming.
Q. Gail, I live in the Bay Area, too. Is the cost of living in The Pinehills as high as it is here?
A. Great question. I used a cost-of-living calculator and came up with these numbers: It’s 37% cheaper to live (and housing is 59% cheaper) in Plymouth.
Q. I noticed the solar panels placed on the roof of the tower. Is there easy access to the panels for the needed upkeep and maintenance?
A. Access to the solar panels is by a ladder from the ground.
Q. About the fireplace and heating system: Is the gas piped in or stored in a tank on the property?
A. The fireplace is fueled by natural gas.
Q. I was wondering how far the house is from the ocean? Walking distance or miles?
A. HGTV Green Home 2010 is minutes from Plymouth Harbor and Nantucket Sound. If you would like to spend time on an Atlantic Ocean beach, you might drive out to the Cape Cod National Seashore. Nauset Light Beach, about a 1-hour drive from the home, is simply breathtaking.
Q. Looks like access to the basement does not have a door. Typically the basement is not heated. Without a door, wouldn’t you get cold drafts in the kitchen in the winter?
A. There is a door that closes off the basement stairs from the kitchen.
Q. Would you please comment on the safety of the lead-coated copper shingles?
A. The metal roof is safe and selected for its durability and authentic look and design. Since the builder covered the tower roof with solar panels, he selected a product that could withstand the weather and last a lifetime.
Q. What is the clearance from the upper bunk bed to the ceiling? Can it accommodate an older child?
A. The upper bunk bed can accommodate an older child. The head of the bed is placed at the ladder location. The ceiling at that point is 10 feet high.

Good morning, my busy bloggers.
Keep those fabulous questions coming. It won’t be long now before someone wins this incredible home.
Did I mention before that I could move my family to the Pinehills and live happily ever after? I absolutely love the location. Remember, I live in gorgeous San Francisco, so it takes an awful lot to make me think of leaving.
Let’s get to this week’s questions.
Q. I love the recycled-magazine starburst mirror. How would I make one?
A. I also love that mirror and, as a crafter, I think you might be able to replicate the look with old magazines and a paper mache-like solution. However, it might be easier to buy one. The mirror was purchased at Peachtree Designs, a boutique on Cape Cod.
Q. Why does this house feature only two bedrooms? It just seems odd to me.
A. Glenn MacKenzie, our amazing builder, says that there are many two-bedroom living arrangements at The Pinehills. The lots that surround the Village Green are small by design and feature walking trails that connect the neighborhood directly to The Pinehills’ shops, stores, restaurants and services. A three-bedroom plan of this home is available, but then the owner sacrifices outside living space. The HGTV Green Home 2010 team decided that the outdoor spaces and gardens were a very important part of the design.
Q. What is the total value of the furnishings, including the artwork?
A. Furnishings and artwork are not separately valued. The total prize package is worth almost $800,000.
Q. I love the kitchen island decor, especially the iron containers. Where can I buy them? Also, what about the covered porch furnishings?
A. Interior designer Linda Woodrum purchased the vintage garden urns at the Plymouth shop Dovetales. The wicker furnishings on the porch are all antiques. (I need to beg Linda to come help me shop for great finds like these for my home.)

Q. You mentioned the lot size before, and I wondered if it was possible to fence it in, or would the owner face HOA issues? Would Invisible Fence be preferable?
A. HGTV Green Home 2010 is fenced on two sides. The owner is allowed to completely fence the yard, if desired. Invisible fencing is also an option.
Q. Can you provide a checklist of green features that resulted in HGTV Green Home 2010’s Gold Certification?
A. HGTVPro.com created an HGTV Green Home package dedicated to NAHB’s Green Building Standard and the eco features that resulted in the certification. Get Green Building Details

Good day, bloggers.
Thank you for the positive feedback on my sleuthing skills and videos. I am on a mission to provide you with the information you seek concerning HGTV Green Home. With that said, let’s get to your questions and answers.
Q. I love the owl prints in the HGTV Green Home 2010 laundry room. Does anyone know where I can purchase them?
A. The Owl Giclee prints are from Ballard Designs.
Q. I would like to know about the ceilings, which look like beadwork wainscoting. And those beams: How did they make those?
A. The coffered ceilings are one of my favorite architectural details! The main floor ceiling area measures plus or minus 27’ x 27’. The beams, constructed from a green product, were equally spaced and centered on the fireplace. The bead board, constructed from ½-inch-thick, 4’ x 9’ MDF sheets, was laid inside the beams.
Q. Is the house Internet-ready with ethernet cords going to the rooms or some type of lines?
A. Yes, the home is wired for phones, cable TV and wireless Internet access.
Q. How much above sea level is this home? Or is it under?
A. HGTV Green Home 2010 is above sea level.
Q. I have a question about the yellow table in the hall wall that is so cute: Where did Linda find that?
A. The demilune table was custom-built for the space by HGTV Green Home carpenter David Brown. It was painted in Sherwin-Williams’ Gold Crest paint.
Q. Where is the door to the basement located?
A. The door is right off the kitchen. I’ve attached a photo so you can see it clearly.

Q. What about refuse collection? Is that covered by association fees?
A. Refuse is collected weekly and covered in the association fee.
Q. What is the directional orientation of the house (N/S/E/W)?
A. The front porch/door faces south.
Q. I really like the painting on the mantel in the living room. Could you please tell me who the artist is? I would like to purchase this painting for my own home. Thank you!
A. The artist of Big Yellow is Richard Knudsen from Provincetown, Mass. See our artwork slideshow for details on pieces featured in the home.
Q. Shades/blinds in all the rooms: What is the material and are they “green” and dust free?
A. The blinds are Everwood 2-inch faux-wood blinds from Hunter Douglas. Visit Hunterdouglas.com for more information about these wood-alternative window treatments.
Q. Are there electrical outlets on the kitchen island?
A. Yes, indeed. Each end of the island features an electrical outlet.
