Ask the Producer: Design Star Finale

I chat with Design Star producer Loren Ruch each week about behind-the-scenes moments we didn’t see on the show. This week: How do the designers keep the winner’s identity secret after the finale? Plus, how big is the DS crew? Read on to find out.

Design Star Winner Danielle Colding With Producer Loren Ruch

This question comes from Parkebernet on the blog: Loren, how are the city locations chosen each season? Would you ever consider moving from a huge city like LA or NYC to, say, Billings, Montana?
We actually choose the locations for a variety of reasons. This year, we wanted to get the show on the air earlier than in the past because we wanted it to wrap before the Olympics. That meant that we needed to shoot in January and February (instead of March and April), so I thought New York City would just be too cold during that time frame especially for outdoor shoots. We also take into consideration where it’s the most convenient to find a good crew to work on the show (which tends to be LA or NY). That said, I would definitely be open to trying other cities provided there are enough shopping options, decent weather, and good accommodations for a huge crew plus our designers and panel. Design Star is a huge commitment for David, Vern and Gen, too, because they need to move to the destination of our choice for over two months. That means packing up kids, spouses, pets and lots and lots of wardrobe options!

How large is the Design Star crew compared to the typical HGTV crew?
Great question, and no one has ever asked me that before! Design Star is SIGNIFICANTLY larger than any other show on the network. We have roughly 150 people working on it as compared to a typical show, which may have 15 to 20. There are just so many departments on a show like this including challenge producers, reality producers, production assistants, talent coordinators, makeup artists — the list goes on and on!

This one comes from Sally Richord on the blog: How doesn’t anyone know who the Design Star is when they go home after they have been eliminated?
Fun question, Sally. Actually all of the designers are invited back for the finale, so they do know who the Design Star is, but we swear everyone involved in the show to secrecy so that they don’t spoil the fun for our viewers. As for keeping the public from spilling the beans, it’s pretty easy, because we shoot the show far before it airs – which means that onlookers don’t really know who the designers are until a few months later.

What can you tell us about Danielle’s new show, Shop This Room?
I can tell you it’s fabulous! Danielle is such a talented designer and has such a fun approach to design. On her show, she starts the entire process of designing a room by shopping for one finishing touch. Once the homeowners have signed off on that, she builds an entire room around it. So, instead of starting with a space plan or broader concept, she shops first, and designs after!

Any clues as to what we’ll see in next week’s Design Star All Stars premiere?
Design Star All Stars is my personal favorite season I have ever worked on in the Design Star franchise. The first episode features some of the best designs I’ve ever seen in any season…and without giving too much away, future episodes include Dancing with the Stars and The Facts of Life – how much more fun does it get than that!?

  1. Daneille, I leaped for joy and almost cried when the announcement was made that you won!! I am a HUGE fan of yours and was rooting for you all the way through the contest. You said could "taste" that win and I'm glad you grabbed a bite and ran with it. Your winning design was "off the hook" and it was obvious that the owners of the house loved it and loved you. As soon as I can afford a house, you will be my first pick to design it. Danielle, I'm looking forward to your new hit show. You put your heart in whatever you do and that sincerity really comes across on the screen. Love you girl.

        • You’re welcome. I agree. She's wonderful

      • What a disjointed, unbalanced, nonfunctional, money wasted, cluttered mess. Danielle created! It looked like another "before" picture, waiting for a real designer to fix the space for real. She's another bubbly personality, inferior decorator, posing as a real designer. Disgusting.

  3. SHOP THIS ROOM? So a shopping star, instead of a design star. Thank for nothing.

By the way, the rating for DS, were horrible this year. They began to crater, when that slob Antonio was foisted upon the viewers, and they have continued to decline.

  4. Danyielle, Congratulations, you were my favorite!. Please let us know when your shows will be on, It is very easy to miss shows you really want to see on HGTV. I cannot figure where some of the designers that they used to have are now. I miss their shows, and don't want to miss yours. You did a wonderful job!! m.j.maynard

  5. Thank you, Loren, for answering our questions so beautifully. You provide great insight into the show, and it is appreciated. I know it must be hard to read some of the overly critical comments, but I think it comes with any "product" that people are passionate about. We all want "our" Design Star to win and emotions run high because of it. In any case, it was a wonderful season and I personally enjoyed every minute of it. May your Design Stars All Stars show generate just as much excitement – and passion! Take care.

    • Thank YOU! I have learned to develop a bit of a thick skin because some of our fans can be a little harsh on me, but honestly I ant to create a show that our viewers love, so the honest feedback is much appreciated!!

  6. Are we going to see Britany again?!! She was my favorite!

JohnsonsFamily on July 26, 2012 at 12:46 pm
    • Brittany was the most consistent and had a unique show idea. Perhaps she can have a show, too? She really deserved it, and I was shocked that with that fabulous dining room in the final episode she didn't win the finale. At least the fans got it right and we get to see more of her designs on the HGTV.com.

Heather on July 27, 2012 at 8:01 pm
    • You will! She won the Fan Favorite so our online team is already working with her to create an online show. More details to come!

Loren on August 2, 2012 at 10:02 am
  7. Agreed! So the focus of the show is …… shopping? Really? Speaking of shopping, perhaps Danielle can do a crossover with What Not to Wear and shop for a decent outfit. What was she thinking with that odd 80s style animal print and pink dress (?) + peplum + whatever it was she had on under it.
Very disappointed in the final choice of the show.

    • I know, right!?

Hollis Ann HOLLA! on July 29, 2012 at 12:21 pm
    • DITTO!!!! I just didn't have the nerve to rank on her outfit.

  8. When I looked at her I just knew it was in her. The better than the best to you Danielle

  9. On the final show, when Luca walked out, did he really say "suckers" to Danielle and Brittany?

Katherine on July 27, 2012 at 6:15 pm
    • Yup. He's so crass! They should have responded saying……"LOSER!"

Wayne on July 28, 2012 at 10:12 am
    • No, I'm pretty sure he said, "Sup, ladies?"

      Chelsea H. on July 28, 2012 at 6:54 pm
      • If he did say "suckers!" he would have been right.

  10. Loren: I'm wondering why Meg was used over and over and over in this season whereas you didn't do that in prior seasons with the winners.

I'm perplexed as to why she is continually pushed to the forefront when your viewership went downwards after she won…lower ratings evidenced by your smaller amount of blogs too.

You all chose her and gave her a show despite the majority of viewers feelings towards her–and now you keep smacking her in the front as though to say..if you just watch her, you'll love her like we at HGTV do. Well you're wrong. She's a reminder that you dont really care about the majority of viewers choice.

Keep ignoring your viewers requests. And they will keep ignoring your station, your show.

Sam on July 28, 2012 at 10:20 am
    • I am a huge fan of Meg's designs. She is one who has to grow on some people, but she is great! She actually knows what she is doing and listens to her clients!

Anne on July 28, 2012 at 3:09 pm
    • Thanks for your comment…We actually believe in all of our Design Stars, including Meg, who's show Meg's Great Rooms does quite well for us. Many viewers really do appreciate her and all of the work she does on the network, so I am proud to give her opportunities on our air. I feel the same way about Danielle and Emily — and the Design Stars before them…I'm sorry that you are not as enthusiastic about Meg, but I respectfully disagree.

loren on August 2, 2012 at 10:04 am
      • I like her designs, but would like to see her vocabulary improve..I am tired of how many times she uses the word "guys"…it's overly familiar and seems at time disrespectful.
