Ask the Producer: Design Star All Stars Episode 2

Each week, I chat with Design Star All Stars producer Loren Ruch about the best on-set moments and what you didn’t see on the show. This week: the most memorable behind-the-scenes dish from the Dancing With the Stars makeover. Plus, which room looked better on TV than in person.

Design Star And Dancing With the Stars

Dancing With the Stars Dancers Jonathan Rogers and Anna Trebunskaya with Design Star Producer Loren Ruch

How did you find the Dancing With the Stars couple to feature on the show?
One of our Design Star producers actually worked on Dancing with the Stars, and asked us “Do you think that we’d want to makeover Jonathan and Anna’s house? I’ve been there and they don’t have a lot of furniture!” That’s all I needed to hear to say “Yes, PLEASE!” I just had a hunch that HGTV viewers would be the same people who watch DWTS, so I thought it would be a fun collaboration!

Did the cast/crew learn any new dance moves? What was the best moment we didn’t see on the show?
You may have seen the small ‘dance’ sequence on the show, but it was even funnier in person! Leslie was so excited to dance with Anna that she was literally fanning herself off afterwards! And Josh wanted to peek through their closets in search of dance costumes (which of course he didn’t because we weren’t working on the bedroom), but it was just a hilarious episode behind-the-scenes and in front of the camera. One of our more fun episodes to shoot, by far!

Design Star Judge Monica Pedersen

Did any of the rooms or features look better (or worse) in person than on camera?
In this case, yes. I have to say that Anna’s room did not look as great in person as I would have hoped. This is just my humble opinion, and I don’t mean to insult anyone, but the walls looked like the colors of ‘scrubs’ in person, so it felt a little medical to me. I also thought that some of the dining room chairs would have benefited by pillows, and that the stand for the chandelier looked unfinished. That said, it still made a pretty first impression when you walked in. Jonathan’s room looked fantastic in person. In fact, Monica Pedersen said “I want them to design my house!” – which is a huge compliment coming from a designer!

  1. OMG, REALLY???? STILL not working! Really unbelievable. It's just not that hard to have a video work correctly!

  2. Sunday 607am and episode 2 is still stuck when Tom is saying, "I think that's annoying". Come on, HGTV!!! Let's fix the problem once and for all!

  3. Please FIX episode 2. I've been trying to watch it since Thursday and it keeps stopping at: "I think that is annoying" and it is!

  4. Where, oh where did the All*Stars crew go? Is everybody on vacation so that those of us who have to work and seek a much-needed respite from the daily grind by watching our favorite designers cannot do so because of technical difficulties? HGTV, I hope you appreciate the loyalty of your viewers because I'm sure I'm not the only one that has been trying for days to see episode 2. How about running it as a double-feature next week with episode 3, which I hope will work in a timely fashion….. Otherwise, what's the point about promoting this new show if nobody can watch it online??? I'm having designer withdrawal!!!

  5. HGTV has great ideas, and so do your faithful viewers. So how about fixing episode 2 so your loyal fans can see why Josh was sent home, Leslie is still there, Tom talks like a magpie, Hilary uses her trademark color, and Dan created another piece extraordinaire? WE'D LIKE TO VIEW THE VIDEO!!! Please, please repair it! What's it gonna take to get the tape up and running???

  6. Even though I've tried umpteen times to watch episode 2, it seems to be permanently stuck when Toms says "That is so annoying". Then, the spoilers were out before the video was repaired, so ended up hearing/reading about it anyway, but it sure would be great to have a visual to watch the interaction, which is part of the fun of Design All*Stars, in my opinion. I'm sad to hear that Josh was sent home as I think his genuine personality adds a definite 'sparkle' to what often can quickly become a very contrived design style, as per the regular judges and their criteria. Tom and Leslie are like the energizer bunnies, always running off @ the mouth, and I don't get why Leslie wasn't sent home after obviously not listening to the homeowner's request for no mirrors, and then rearranging her team-member's styling. Dan as per usual produced a masterpiece, and Hilari, you are a bright spot of color in all that you do/are! And oh, by the way, when can we watch some of our other favorite designers and their new summer shows???

    • I think I counted 3 mirrors in that re-do, not to mention the mirrored buffet in the dining room……..does anybody have listening ears???

  7. … days later … trying to watch this episode online is still impossible … 0_o

    • About an hour ago, I scanned through the show (having to watch that stupid blinds commercial about 9 times!), and it worked every place I stopped, from start to finish. The problem must be on your computer. I was using an older Apple PowerBook G4, with FireFox browser.

  8. RE. Video problems

I have the best luck watching HGTV vids using Safari. I'm not getting stuck/repeating vids, but DS7 and AllStars vids often stop playing and display a black screen. So far, pressing the play button usually replays the last ad or restarts the current show segment and the video then runs to completion.

PS, I loathe how much louder that LG ad is compared to the shows and even other ads. I usually wear headphones, but it's still annoying having to constantly tweak volume even when using speakers.

  9. How can I find the leaf art/sculpture piece behind the couch in Anna's room? I loved it!
