Ask the Producer: All Stars Episode 3

Each week, I chat with Design Star All Stars producer Loren Ruch about the best on-set moments and what you didn’t see on the show. Read on for his dish on The Facts of Life set makeovers!

Design Star Judges With Mindy Cohn and Design Star Producer Loren Ruch

How did you decide to use The Facts of Life sets as inspiration for this week’s episode?

I happen to be friends with Mindy Cohn (and have known her for about 15 years), and I am also an enormous fan of ‘80’s sitcoms – as are many of our viewers! On last year’s blog and message boards many people asked me if we’d ever consider doing a ‘set’, so I thought this would be our chance. What could be more fun than recreating my favorite show of all time, with a wonderful friend on set, and modernize it for a contemporary audience?!

What was it like for Mindy Cohn to revisit updated versions of the sets from her youth?
Everyone fell in LOVE with Mindy on the set! She told so many fun stories, and cracked us up the entire time she was there. She told us that she literally spent ‘ages 14-20’ on that set, so it was really fun to be with her on a trip down memory lane.

Any hints about the All Stars finale?
Sure…why not! If you thought yurts or tiny houses were fun, just wait until you see what our designers do with shipping containers! You just may want to buy one for yourself!

  1. TROLL ALERT! PLEASE NOTE: "This" Erikcreature, is not THE erikcreature who posts erudite opinions about design, on these blogs.

  4. I agree with everything Julia says, GO LESLIE! By the way Tom, the pattles were a nice idea but from someone who has rowed on a lot crew teams they need to be crossed.

  5. Let's just say she IS from the ghetto. So what? Should she not be allowed a chance simply because she doesnt speak in the so called eloquent manner as Danielle? Hilari is being herself, who she is..not being phony….as is Danielle. We dont have need to try to be clones of one another. Hilari doesnt use profanity on tv, tries to get along with others that she disagrees with…and entered a contest hoping to win just as the others. She appears to dress nicely as well. I dont care if a black person sounds white or ghetto…its the content of their heart, their character, their personality, things like that are what matters. I'm not embarrassed of her at all. But you are entitled to your opinion as well as I.

    • My comments above might seem as though I'm saying Danielle is phony and I'm not saying that. She also appears to be sincerely herself and thats fine. Perhaps Danielle speaks as the product from her environment or family circle, or friend circle….whatever. I dont believe Danielle is phony either. I like both of them and can accept both black women as simply being women just as the white ones who just want a chance to show what they believe is a talent to design (or decorate),,,oh…and also want a tv show or some big bucks if they win or the great exposure from doing this show.

      • The problem IS, regardless if Hilari and Danielle are nice, bubbly, attractive, personable, warm, caring and/or cooperative, they are not Designers. They can't design to save their lives!

  6. Wow I can't believe that Dan was let go! Judges you made the wrong choice! It seems to me what you say you are looking for and what you judge on are two different things.

  7. One of the Design Star contestants, an All-Star if I remember correctly, was eliminated because his seating didn't face the fireplace. Yet that is a layout often used by HGTV major designers, including David B and Genevieve, and Candace. What gives? I agree that Dan is outstanding, equal to David B in creativity, originality, and pizazz.

  8. I think it is time to get new judges on Design Star. They are losing there touch!

  9. Design All-Stars has been terrible due to the same old tired lame judges!!!!!! Not watching anymore from this day forward.

  10. In spite of all the posted comments, Design Stars is still one of the best shows HGTV produces! It's always fascinating to see the imagination and skills of designers put to the test. It beats watching House Hunters 7 nights a week in every evening time slot. Repetition is fine but NOT overkill!
