Meg on Episode 2: Why She Felt Bad for Hilari

Meg Caswell on Design Star

The White Room Challenge wasn’t exactly Meg’s finest moment in season six — she was nearly eliminated before coming back to win the series. “It’s one of the hardest challenges…I know, because I failed it,” she says.

Hear her take one year later, why she felt for Hilari and why “every single minute counts.”

Episode 2: The Best + Worst of the White Room Challenge

Design Star Judges and Host and Guest Judge Vanilla Ice

Guest Judge Vanilla Ice With Design Panel and David Bromstad

I like to think of the White Room Challenge as the sand trap of Design Star: talented designers go in and they don’t come out. It’s always the ones you least expect, too. Here’s what went down on this year’s iconic challenge.

The Best White Rooms From Design Star

Since season one of Design Star, contestants have been given the ultimate blank canvas: a white room and materials from an unconventional source, like a food and restaurant supply warehouse or a 99-cent store. Get ready for tonight’s White Room Challenge episode (airing at 9/8c) by browsing through the best white rooms from past seasons. Which one is your favorite?

Mark Diaz White Room Challenge

Season 4 Winner Antonio Ballatore's Geometric White Room

Season four winner Antonio Ballatore wowed with a bold striped pattern and a headboard made of a bookcase and pool noodles and topped off with sugary cereal.

Dan Vickery - White Room Challenge

Season 4 Fan Favorite Dan Vickery's Apple Artwork

Season four fan favorite Dan Vickery used apples to create a, ahem, deliciously different focal point, and kidney beans for an inspired “rug.”

Todd David White Room Challenge

Season 2 Contestant and Room Crashers Host Todd Davis's Wave-Inspired Room

Season two finalist and Room Crashers host Todd Davis used paint and items from a 99-cent store to create this wave-swept space.

Caption This: White Room Challenge

Ice, ice, baby! You may know Vanilla Ice (aka Robert Van Winkle) best for his ’90s rap career, but he also has more than 15 years of home improvement experience and his own show, The Vanilla Ice Project, on DIY Network. He’ll bring his remodeling chops to this week’s episode of Design Star as a guest judge. So tell me…how would you caption this photo of Mr. Ice? Write your best caption in the comments below.

Candice’s Recap: Episode 2

I may be busy shooting Candice Tells All, but I’m still keeping a close eye on Design Star! This week, extraordinary designer Thom Filicia came by to lend his style expertise to one of my all-time favorites: the White Box Challenge. It killed me not to be there. This time, the designers were each given an identical room and asked to transform it using only restaurant supplies. They were told specifically not to create functional spaces. This challenge is a great opportunity for the designers to really express themselves by thinking unconventionally (which can prove to be difficult for even some of the best designers).
