Caption This: Episode Six

We’re down to the final four and the second-to-last challenge before an HGTV Star is named. This week, our remaining designers, Jeribai, Tiffany, Brooks and Anne, are each tasked with transforming the inside of an old school bus. Their requirements? To create something unexpected and unconventional, and to absolutely not play it safe. I would say tensions and stress levels are high, but look at those faces! They look pretty ecstatic to hop on those buses. What do you think Tiffany’s saying here? Write your best caption in the comments below.

Give Yourself a Hand (Or Maybe Not)

Have you checked out our Design Star Pinterest board? Over on the board, our followers are chatting away about a certain detail in Stanley and Hilari’s kitchen. Remember these hand-shaped cabinet pulls?

Kitchen Hand Detail

The judges gave the pulls a definitive thumbs-down, but our Pinterest followers are having a full-blown debate. Some are 100 percent against it, like Kathy V.  “I didn’t like the pulls at all…I can’t imagine enough people like them enough to even have them on the market. Just sayin’.”

Others aren’t so sure.  Marty T says they’d make great mudroom coat hooks, while Alison M. likes them as art pieces only. Diane K knew Stanley was in trouble the minute he started to screw them in. “Would have made great towel racks, but as cabinet knobs…no! I knew he was a goner.”

And reader Melissa N says, “I did not like the hands either, but after Stanley received so much praise for his white room in that challenge (wtf was that???), I never know what the judges are looking for.”

But LaRaina W says “I think this is cool and interesting! Definitely not everyone’s taste (or mine), but I can still appreciate it.” And Angela B adds:  “I think this is great!!! This would be perfect for a closet door. Air Five!”

So what do you think? Take the poll, then tell us why you love/loathe the hands in the comments below.  (See all of the designs from the kitchen challenge here.)

Ask the Producer: Episode 6

I’m chatting with producer Loren Ruch about what happened behind the scenes of the often-dreaded kitchen challenge. This week: The best Kitchen Cousins moment on set. Plus, do the designers get to reunite after the season ends?

HGTV Design Star Judges With Kitchen Cousins and HGTV Magazine Editor Sara Peterson

I love the Kitchen Cousins! It looked like they had fun on set. What was their best moment on the set?
We had many fun moments on the set with them, but the favorite for me was a behind-the-scenes moment that they probably don’t even know about! During evaluation, the producers (including myself) are in a control room watching the entire process. We have a director whose job is to call which camera he wants to use at any given moment to capture the drama and tension of what is going on. He originally had one camera allocated to John and another to Anthony so that they could each have their moment in the spotlight, but every single time our director would call for John’s camera, Anthony would end of finishing his sentence and we’d miss the shot. Then he’d call for Anthony’s camera, and John would end up doing the same thing and we’d miss that shot too! We were cracking up behind the scenes because they literally seem more like twins than even cousins. It was like a synchronized swimming routine! Finally, our director opted to just use one camera as a two-shot for both of the cousins so that we wouldn’t miss any more moments!

Goodbye, Cathy

Three National Magazines

Despite the fact that her wedding was featured in “three national magazines,” Cathy’s drab tablescapes and un-romantic sweetheart table made the judges say “We will not be producing your show.” But she’s not going without a fight! See what she has to say about going home.
