Caption This: Finale!

This Sunday’s HGTV Star finale is going to bring back seven old friends and two new ones. I’m sure you can guess who. Our final three designers will be going into their last challenge with the help of their former Star competitors and the guidance of everyone’s favorite brothers, Drew and Jonathan Scott. As you can tell, Tiffany is a bit shocked when the twins walk into her suite. Write your best caption in the comments below.

Behind the Scenes: The Camera Challenges

If you’re a seasoned HGTV Star fan, you know that a camera can change everything. Even the most colorful personality can become washed out when it’s Camera Challenge time. I don’t envy the contestants one bit, and even our seasoned judges admit that learning to love the camera is a process. “I faked it, but I was so scared.” David says of his early Color Splash days.

HGTV Star Contestant Jeribai Tascoe

Jeribai Smiles for the Camera

“Whoever says they were fantastic the first time they were on TV is a liar,” jokes The High/Low Project host and HGTV Star judge Sabrina Soto. See more of their off-the-cuff comments after the jump + weigh in: Which finalist do you think is best on camera?

How does it feel being a contender for the Star title? Find out! But first, here are some pre-finale words from our finalists:

Brooks: “I came here to prove that you could successfully think outside the box and challenge the norms in design, and I think I successfully did that.”

Tiffany: “What I need to do to pull off this final challenge is to keep doing what I have been doing but to add a bit more seasoning to it.”

Jeribai: ”I’ve been trusting my gut this whole competition and it’s been paying off.”

Vern Vs. Dan: Who Wears a Better Necktie?

HGTV Star Vern Yip and Dan Collopy

Our behind-the-scenes correspondent and online host, Dan Collopy, has been necktie-ing it up all season long. Vern could sense he had some competition in the fashion department, so to spice things up he declared a necktie challenge: Vern Vs. Dan. Watch the fists come out as patterns and solids collide. Then, cast your vote in the poll below. Who wears a better necktie, Dan or Vern?

Ask the Producer: HGTV Star Episode 6

Each week, I chat with HGTV Star producer Loren Ruch about his favorite behind-the-scenes moments and what you didn’t see on TV. This week: How many hours of footage does the crew end up with after each episode? Plus, which buses looked better (or worse) in person?

How did you get the idea to redo buses on this week’s episode?
One of our amazing producers suggested making over school buses this year, and I jumped at the opportunity!  I couldn’t think of a more creative, iconic, and just plain fun small-space episode. And it didn’t disappoint.  I think that this was my favorite episode of the entire season!

How many people are on the HGTV Star crew?
We have over 100 crew members on HGTV Star. There are producers, carpenters, makeup and hair people (for the panel – not for the contestants), camera operators, sound engineers, directors, etc., etc….and the list goes on and on and on. It’s a huge production; definitely HGTV’s biggest show produced all year!

How many hours of footage do you typically have for each season?
This number is so high that it will likely astound you! We have anywhere from 6-8 cameras shooting nonstop for about 12 hours a day, every day of the week, for over a month. I couldn’t even guess how many hours of footage that would add up to!

Did you think any of the buses looked better (or worse) in person?
Yes, I am glad you asked this. Tiffany’s bus, in person, was ABSOLUTELY amazing!  It took Sabrina Soto’s breath away when she saw it. On TV, it looked good, but in person, it looked GREAT! The color was so intense and the attention to detail was mind-boggling.

What was the best or most memorable moment from the set of the bus episode?
For me it was watching Jeribai on The Talk. It was like watching someone have a life changing moment right in front of my eyes. He just turned ON when the audience started to cheer, and I think he nailed that camera challenge!

Anne’s Goodbye: “I Was Shocked When I Got Kicked Off”

HGTV Star Episode 6 Elimination

Anne describes her style as “livable eclectic,” and her spaces have all pulled in that recognizable Anne element that everyone has come to love. There have been a few unfortunate mishaps here and there (the bedding from challenge one and the draperies from challenge three), but she’s ultimately impressed the judges all around. “She had some of the best spaces that were completed this season,” Vern says. “I was very surprised she didn’t make it to the top three.” I think we all were! Anne says, “I was the most consistent in my design; I’ve won three times; and I was the most consistent in my camera challenge, so I was very shocked when I got kicked off.”

Hear Anne’s take on the challenge that sent her home. Plus, David and the judges discuss her best design moments throughout the season.

Episode Six Behind-the-Scenes Dish

HGTV Star Behind-the-Scenes Dish Episode 6

We have school buses! Could it be any weirder?” Probably not, David. And the best part? The designers were given the ultimate creative freedom to do whatever they wanted. Hence the unique time traveler’s space lounge by Brooks and the Alice in Wonderland-themed bus by Tiffany. You would think this quirky challenge would be a breeze for some, but even Brooks admitted the limitless options were a bit overwhelming.

Hear David and the judges’ very candid views on last night’s bus designs and live audience camera challenges. (Even David admits he struggled with his camera challenge during season one.)
