We’ve seen a spike in the number of online readers searching for tips on how to paint furniture. It’s a quick, inexpensive way to give old pieces a dramatic new look, which can transform an entire room.

Designer Tyler Wisler says, “Painting is always the easiest and quickest way to give any outdated piece of furniture an instant makeover, but the key to all of it, regardless of the color choice, is to prep. Prep, prep, prep those pieces correctly! Just grabbing a can of paint and having at it will inevitably end in cracked and peeling paint in no time. A good once over with a fine grit sandpaper, then a thorough wipe down with a damp cloth to get rid of any dust particles, is the simplest way to get the paint to stick to the piece and will last so much longer!”

Did you resolve to eat better in 2013? After a month of cookie overload, I’m ready to make some healthier choices, too. It’s easy enough to honor resolutions during the week, but weekend party foods are often heavy on cheese, cream and calories.

Luckily, a few simple swaps can lighten up your appetizer spread without sacrificing great flavor. Here are some recipes to try this weekend.

Carrot Ginger Soup

Carrot-Ginger Soup Shooters
This vegetarian carrot-ginger soup is flavored with vibrant curry spices and fresh ginger. Pureed carrots give the soup a velvety texture without high-calorie cream. Spoon hot or room temperature soup into shot glasses for the perfect party-sized portion. Pressed for time? Pick up a box of prepared carrot-ginger soup, then top each shot glass-sized serving with Greek yogurt and a fresh mint leaf.

Eggplant Chips With Cilantro Pesto

Eggplant Chips With Cilantro Pesto
Baked eggplant chips are sweet, crunchy and delicious, and make a surprising alternative to classic potato chips.  For a seasonal twist, swap the basil in the pesto for kale, arugula or spinach.

BRIANA: Wall decals can be fun and are definitely convenient (especially for my fellow renters, holla!), but when I saw them in my fiancé’s grandparents’ home over the holiday break, I knew they’d reached peak saturation. So, are you tired of this trend? Or are you still stuck on decals?

KELLEY: I loved them at first – so cute! So clever! I especially liked the chandeliers. Now when I see them, I shudder. They feel so two years ago. Oversaturation is right!
