  3. That's really not fair, because why do they have people wasting their time, than with entering the drawing till June 2nd, if they already picked a winner way back in March??? Really what a scam, just saying.

  4. The truth is I still will, because I would love to win one of their beautiful homes. I do think next time they will be much more careful, maybe passing out no disclosure forms and having them signed as soon as the ambush happens, but it they don't make them sign until five days how can they be held accountable??

It pains me to say this;( The camera does not lie and colors didn't flow, patterns of 10-12 diff major trends & colors looked like a wreck happened. 82. It seems that HGTV has several stipulations although they say they don't . researching the present and past winners of this "giveaway" all the winners are elderly or past their 40's. As well as the name base no one with an "ethnic" or "cultural" bases name has been chosen ever! How can they say everyone is eligible then eliminate those they don't see fit to accept such a "giveaway" it is the younger people who pay homage to this network. I will definitely investigate this more thoroughly. I believe others should as well

I do think next time they will be much more careful, maybe passing out no disclosure forms and having them signed as soon as the ambush happens, but it they don't make them sign until five days how can they be held accountable?

            panther_1935 on March 30, 2016 at 10:37 pm

    Happy Sweeping!

    • Thanks for sharing the links, Coop. After reading the rules, there are two things to keep in mind.

The first is that this is a random drawing for weekly winners and for the grand prize. The other is that the drawing is conducted by the same company that does the Home Sweepstakes drawings for HGTV.

So your life story, finances and all that other stuff don't have any bearing on whether you win or not.

Since the same company administers this Sweepstakes that does the Dream Home Sweepstakes, those conspiracy theorists or whiners in general may want to take a pass on this one.

I'll be entering. Who knows, I could win some hefty lunch money. :)

  92. The sweeps entry is to be based on a persons entry 2 times a day (at HGTV and DYI sites) and the one time entry at Realtor.com. It is not based on the viewing of all of the videos and review of all of the pictures daily which most or all of us have been doing since the beginning of the sweeps. It is not based on the illness of one person or another. I am sure many of us have had worse or some illness that surpasses the Rennie's. and would have made equal or better stories than thier's. If you didn't enter 2 times a day and at Realtor.com you should not qualify at all. I never seen any place where we were in competition over our illness, tragedy's or what ever. I am sure it is coincidental if they did win. HGTV would not stretch the rules to make a great story. I pray they didn't. I trust in them. Although some have questioned and even I have, but think about it. They would not do that, they are to reputable and have been doing this for 20 years. they would not want their reputation ruined or tarnished in any way. "CONGRRATS to the Rennie's if they are the winner. I can't wait till the final post is made by HGTV for verification…

  94. Listen up Scripps Network,
When I win one of the home sweepstakes, you better be prepare to offer me a job alone with the giveaway. I am no designer like Genevieve, but I can smile like her all the time. Cant' restore old home like Nicole Curtis; wish I can paint like David Bromstad, not funny like Ellen Degeneres. I have done many failed DIY projects, definitely not like Josh Temple; somehow he always make it work, nor do I have passion for shiplap like Joanna Gaines, and like Tarek; I can identify more with the "Flops". To summarize it, I could go with Jillian Harris's grace, I will do anything, anything for Anthony Carrino…oh yeah, and tell the brothers that I will need to borrow their jet, since I have 2 puppies, that'll make it easy for all that traveling.

  95. The amount of greed in these comments are ridiculous. Im actually glad that I didn't win it or any of you despite how much I wanted and needed this giveaway. I had bone cancer and lost my leg at 18 years old and I've never had a reliable car or the ability to get out and work because if I did I would lose my health insurance. There is no way for me to get ahead besides college and that's not even something I can do without a car. My life has been horrible trying to just have a normal life and even I am happy for this family. Someone else was in the same shape and it was well deserved. I don't think it's a crime to be so happy and excited that you post it early. I don't think it's bad at all. We are lucky they even have this giveaway so be thankful to even have the opportunity. That's all I have to say.

    C funk on March 27, 2016 at 11:24 pm
    • Every year, lots of people are disappointed not to win. It's just part of the process. Other people are perfectly delighted for the winner, so, to me, it sounds very cranky of you to say you're glad none of the bloggers won. We like to wish each other luck, even though we know the chance to win is miniscule.

I'm glad you are happy for the winner and for the opportunity to have won. MANY of us are.

To quit life at 18, now that is what sounds ridiculous to me. If you really wanted transportation to college, you would find it. Any bus system will include the colleges. An article in the student newspaper would bring out volunteers to give you a ride. Etc.

Lots of people have terrible problems. Some people lose legs to diabetes, cancer, serving in the army, ghastly ski accidents, etc. I know two people who lost a leg at a young age. They both got on with life and didn't use that terrible loss to spend the rest of their lives sitting around and whining on welfare.

I almost lost a leg at 3 and I still have pain, so I don't take this lightly. But it does not give you any moral highground, and it doesn't excuse not leading a normally productive life.

  96. In the rules all the dates are listed as on or about. They have never provided clues as to the winner. When all the requirements are met, we have in the past either found out during a dreamhome special which can be a ways away or in recent years on this blog. Either way, it is so exciting ;)

    ABCDEFG76 on March 27, 2016 at 7:43 pm
    • The reason why I keep checking it is because HGTV is going to be making an announcement this week. I was looking on facebook to see if anything new had been posted and when I looked for the original comment I could no longer find it, so they have either hidden it from public or removed the post.

  99. Have the legal eagles at Scripps Networks had time to verify that all the i's were dotted and t's crossed on the Rennie's Dream Home winner documents yet? When will David Rennie be officially declared the lucky Dream Home 2016 winner? Monday would be a very good day for the big news, wouldn't you say?

Still, can you imagine how long it could take back in the good old days — without all of our modern technology to speed things along? When couriers had to carry those laboriously hand-carved stone tablets across the desert sands by camel, to be carefully studied, judged legally binding and a proclamation issued by the Pharaoh, news which was then spread across the land by word of mouth?! It took months to find out the Dream Home winner's name back then….

  106. Just thought we would wish everyone a Happy Easter. And thought we would share this. There is help out there dbdstock. Many times I wanted to give up and sometimes still do but I am lucky to have a Veteran's Center here in Seattle. You just need to check all the Veteran's Resources in your city or town. Because of my accident I have been unable to cross streets. My Veteran's Center has a Service Dog trained to help me overcome my fear. When I arrive I am greeted by a Beautiful Black Lab. Soney isn't jealous at all. He is still in the puppy stages even though he is several years old and is hard to train because he is so spoiled. Anyway, at a certain time in my Creative Class in comes the Service Dog on his own and lays down at my feet. I can cross the street now by myself thanks to all the hard work that Service Dogs do for their country!

  111. I am so confused about this ambush as it seems like HGTV is giving mixed signals. Lets do a recap, on Friday some people got a email that a winner would be notified soon, then on Sunday it was leaked that the winner had been ambushed at church, then on the Tuesday this blog was posted about the drawing, on Thursday the email I got from contacting HGTV said a potential winner had been selected and notified but had not yet accepted the grand prize, then today Tiffany posted about selecting the winner last week. Is anyone else confused about this?

    panther_1935 on March 26, 2016 at 5:21 pm
    • I have noticed in the past, that the winner has already been contacted when they post about the drawing.
Maybe because they want to make sure of the winner before they announce that there has been a selection. Also in the past, the winner's neighbors have leaked the info. So they don't want to blow the ambush by letting people know they are out cruising the streets of the winners home.

The blog doesn't get instant info. A lot of times the bloggers post things days before HGTV gets around to telling us anything.
      Hope this helps.

      Eugenia27 on March 26, 2016 at 5:35 pm
    • Its been common for us to get what seem to be delayed postings. Perhaps there's some internal approval process that has to be gone through.

      dreamn_again on March 26, 2016 at 6:46 pm
    • I received the email on Thursday, March 17th. Not that that detail probably matters :) Some received the email and some didn't. Only one picture with Tiffany was leaked 1st (the one with only her reflection in the camera lens). The other two (with her by the car, her with the Rennies in the church) were posted later (if I'm remembering correctly). I'm really surprised they told you the winner had already been selected AND notified since they haven't confirmed that anywhere else right? :)

      ABCDEFG76 on March 26, 2016 at 10:27 pm
      • Yes, that is what they told me and that is why Tiffany's post on facebook got me confused because it seemed like she was saying they only just drew the winner this past week. I was searching the Internet to see if there had every been a leak before and found the one from 2011 that was by a neighbor, I was not around the blog then so I do not know if they announced the winner sooner or not.

        panther_1935 on March 26, 2016 at 11:01 pm
        • since she said "last week" (when she selected the winner) I took it as the week of March 17th? Did you?

          ABCDEFG76 on March 26, 2016 at 11:12 pm
          • That is what is so confusing because if they really did the drawing on the 17th, that's not a lot of time to set up a ambush. Also the winner was suppose to be drawn the first of March not last week. Why would they wait until just last week to draw the winner. Also something that I just noticed was that the guy Mark Smiles does not even live in the same state as David Rennie and at first I did not really pay that much attention and thought that the guy got the information from the church member. I honestly do not know if he is the winner or not

            panther_1935 on March 26, 2016 at 11:27 pm
          • They don't need much time to do the ambush. That is a well-oiled machine. Everyone just hops into action.

  114. My heart is filled with joy to see such wonderful human beings win the HGTV DREAM HOME. Congratulations to the Rennie Family! May you continue to find favor in the Lord, and be bless. The Almighty didn't bring you this far to abandoned you, he will provide a way to either pay for the taxes of the home; if you choose to keep it, or enjoy the cash option as well.

I am grateful that HGTV did not disqualify the winners because the information was disclosed in social media; that's says a lot about the entity itself. Great people like the Rennie's should not be punished for other people's mistakes.

I share the excitement with the family in hope that one day I could be the winner of another wonderful home. It's my wish that HGTV continues to do sweepstakes packages like we saw in this year's dream home, where the give away includes a boat in addition to the home, the car and of course…the money.

havanera on March 26, 2016 at 1:25 pm
    • HGTV has not said anything about the winner's officially, so we do not know what they are doing. If they did disqualify the winner it would because of them disclosing about winning. I do find it weird that Tiffany posted on her facebook about drawing a winner this past week so maybe Dave Rennie was not the winner, I honestly do not know.

      panther_1935 on March 26, 2016 at 1:36 pm
      • It is strange when she said "Out of over 127,000,000 entries (the highest ever) I got to select the winner of the HGTV Dream Home 2016!!!"

Why say " I " got to select if it is a random drawing by an independent source Ritway, Inc.?? Not trying to cause trouble but that is just curious wording to me.

Anon on March 26, 2016 at 3:22 pm
        • If you watch the video it shows what she means, Tiffany meant that she picks the ball out there is nothing fishy going on with the drawing.

  129. Thanks Deerspring, What an inspiring story, I can't wait to see their excitement when HGTV posts the reveal. What a selfless deserving family.

As a mother with a child diagnosed as an adult with one kidney that is small and in her pelvis (horseshoe kidney) and an 18 month old grandson (belongs to another daughter) whose kidneys are enlarged and have been monitored since he was in utero hoping for resolution so he won't have to have surgery, I appreciate the generosity of this wonderful family.

It is always wonderful when someone in the spot light can bring out a need that can help others as more will see the testimony.

  130. Do you think HGTV will say anything more on this blog, Facebook (via Tiffany's acct), instagram, twitter etc. or it will be quiet until the "big reveal" next week?

    ABCDEFG76 on March 25, 2016 at 7:15 pm
    • From past experience, probably will be quit until the reveal. Some years we did not see it until the Dreamhome special, but they have done it first here as well. Either way, HGTV makes it special.

  131. It's hard to believe it's been seven years already since Super Fan Gail Fenton starred in this HGTV video about how the Dream Home Grand Prize drawing is done by an independent judging organization. That year, the Sweepstakes brought in a whopping 39,183,686 entries. Oh, for the good old days!
    http://videos.hgtv.com/video/hgtv-dream-home-2009

The winners of Dream Home 2009 in Sonoma, CA were Cheryl and Joe Smith of Lakeland, Florida. As Joe commented, he was in his swimming trunks when host Chi-Lan Lieu and the HGTV Ambush Team knocked on their front door. For her part, Cheryl said she didn't have time to put on any makeup and didn't even have shoes on. Oh well, thrilled winners they were in any event.

    • Thank you Coop for another example of HGTV letting people know how the drawing process worked and for it to be one of my favorite dreamhomes. I got to tour the 2009 in Sonoma which was a highlight. I loved the double pantry and the mini vineyard which is so Sonoma. I have loads of pictures from that wonderful weekend trip which included the dreamhome, the Charles Shultz Museum, and of course the Jelly belly factory.

  132. Too rich, too poor. Too female, too male. Too soon, too late. Too old, too young. Too white, too dark. Too exited, too blah. And now, too well-known. After 20 years of generous giving you'd think HGTV would just get tired of all the criticism.
Congratulations to the Rennie family. Truly exiting how one family's life can change!

  135. Just seems so coincidental that a person with a highly publicized (8 person) kidney transplant won in March "National Kidney Awareness Month". I have no doubt HGTV conducts these sweepstakes fairly though. Just makes you wonder what else we don't know :)

And the "reveal" was just very odd. A picture showing the family with Tiffany's reflection in the camera lens:)! Then other pictures showing her with the family. And of course all the FB "leaks", posts, likes, and comments. I would think it might be a hoax for the 20th anniversary, except it was posted on a Church Website…It will just be interesting to see how this unfolds. I can't wait until the official announcement!

HGTV if you are listening we would love more clues next time of the state, the town, the person's occupation, etc. I remember all of us searching online last year for the hotel trim and the river. It was so much fun! This is certainly a "Dream Home"…its fun to dream even if logically I know a 1 in 127 million (or whatever #) isn't too likely! (:

    ABCDEFG76 on March 25, 2016 at 4:04 pm
    • Of course it's fixed. Look at the year of Katrina. Then a New Orleans women wins that same year (new mexico dream home). The year Monica Pederson was the ambusher when she was pregnant (Carolina Dream hOme). They didn't want to send her all over by airplane so the winner is from Tennessee not far from HGTV headquarters. The examples go on and on and on! Wake up people.

Smith on March 25, 2016 at 4:24 pm
    • Not sure if you read this article yet but Tiffany Brooks, the HGTV host who was selected back in December to ambush the winner was also a kidney transplant recipient, what a huge coincidence! LOL! :)

      • What are truly the odds that the host doing the giveaway had a kidney transplant, the winner had a kidney transplant just a year ago, and it was national kidney month?? What a big story for the 20th anniversary of the giveaway. If he was truly drawn first and did not break any rules but posting and liking on Facebook during the leak then he deserves to win but it all just seems so set-up and not a fair random drawing at all that it is advertised to be.

Guest on March 29, 2016 at 5:05 pm
    • This is all devastating for me and my family. We are such proud HGTV viewers and have always entered in all of the giveaways. I don't want to believe that this is fixed. I truly want to believe it's genuine. However with all this evidence it is making me feel it's not. It will not stop us from entering. Hell they may look at us a military family that is in need. Ha ha like really!!! I have to say I am truly heartbroken! Even while living in Germany for 3 years while traveling to Africa via car I still entered! I didn't care how much we were gonna pay in data. Needless to say I am heart broken.

Thank you for providing us here in the United States and it's territories the opportunity to be a part of Dreamhome. This is one of my favorite activities. I can hardly wait for the reveal when we get to see the winners excitement.

As I have read some of the complaining, I was thinking how blessed we are to live in a country where even the poorest of poor have more then many in third world countries. We can turn on our moen faucet and get all the clean water we want where others have to walk miles for dirty water and have little food for their children. WE need to be grateful for all the blessings we have to live here and the freedom we have to dream big.

    • They receive only a few vats of postcards. Most entries are electronic.

Lindingo on March 25, 2016 at 11:46 am
      • A few years back, I did a calculation based on how many postcard entries they received compared to total entries. It came up in different posts by HGTV about how many were postcards and how many were total (online & postcards). So I did the math. The calculation came to postcards only accounting for 3% of total entries during that particular drawing. HGTV used to get tons of postcards (shown by photos). Now they just post cropped photos of the postcard vats to make it look like they receive more than one who think.
Postcards seems to have dwindled over the years; probably all the winners have stated (and anyone can correct me on that one) that they entered twice a day online. I have yet to see one person say that they won via postcard.

If you still don't think their process is random, there is no way to reassure you. http://videos.hgtv.com/video/hgtv-dream-home-winn

Lindingo on March 25, 2016 at 11:50 am
      • Judy,
That is exactly what you saw on the video, but apparently not understanding. Thank you Lindingo for posting it for review, I've enjoyed dreaming with you for so many years..

This video was actually a real dreamhome drawing that many of us viewed.the year it was made and it was re-posted several times to help people who may have not read the rules to understand the process.

The ambush is part of the dream and a part most of us long time dreamers looked forward to and is also included in the rules. Many of us have enjoyed this process for years. This process is explained in the rules which are provided. if a person chooses to enter, you are agreeing to that process. If you do not agree with the rules, then a person should not enter. I am sure there are other contests which those people might enjoy.

There is no Damage to control, someone outside of HGTV saw the ambush and let the cat out of the bag. Nothing the winner nor HGTV could do would undo that person's decision, but it does not change the process which HGTV is obligated to follow per the rules. NO winner is ever announced until they return the prescribed paperwork because per the rules if they do not do so in 5 days an alternate winner would be chosen. When the paperwork is returned, HGTV announces the winner.

I hope this helps you to better understand the rules provided when we all entered the contest.
An HGTV Dreamhome fan foreverand looking forward to HGTV's winner reveal,
        nursejudy

It still goes on and is very short for some. I lost a very well loved niece at the age of 11 from meningiitis within 24 hours and will never see her graduate, or enjoy what life here has to offer. 153. I have a terrific idea for HGTV'S announcement of the winners. Why not show the drawing on live TV or similar to the 2012 video on their site or just like the lottery does. Just think of the number of viewers (possible 128 million) they and their sponsors would have watching it. . "Wouldn't that be great'.. That way there would never be any question of it's authenticity or creditability. You still could surprise the winner by showing up with a check at their door and/or with the car. They could record the drawing and then do the ambush and show all at one time on a TV special. I'm sure all 128 million would watch. I WOULD….. JUST A SIMPLE IDEA.. Maybe I am crazy or dreamed this because of the 20th anniversary are they giving a 2nd car away? I thought I saw that some where or was it another contest???? I am probably crazy! If not true then I am sorry for the mistake correct me if I am wrong. I don't want to start gossip or tell a lie. I tried looking for it but I couldn't find it any where so if not forget I said any thing. PLEASE.

pattieclemm on March 25, 2016 at 12:14 am

pattieclemm on March 25, 2016 at 10:37 am
      • The 2nd car was for a 2017 model, so one would assume it would not be drawn/given away until later in the year. IIRC model years start in AUG so it will definitely be sometime after that.

    jazzygirl9 on March 24, 2016 at 11:12 pm
  156. I am disappointed in the negativity and entitlement expressed by many this passed week. This is what spoiled the message board which many of us enjoyed for years, please don't do the same here. Like many in a busy life, I come here to relax, enjoy, and dream and see the new ideas HGTV comes up with and you never know, maybe one of us will some day win. This is the second time over the years someone saw the reveal (which no one has control over) and utilized media, but just like the other time, I know HGTV will handle it well.

No one wins HGTV contests because of their circumstances or their FICO score. Like all major contests, HGTV utilizes an independent company to handle the entries and the drawing. This means winners are not chosen by HGTV but randomly drawn by the independent company. Each entry has as much chance as the other. This is explained in the rules and HGTV has shown a video on the process a number of times over the years and is done with fairness to all.

I am so grateful for the 12 years of dreamhome I have been a part of. I only wish I had known about it sooner so I could have enjoyed the other 8. I have gone back and looked at the ones before my time and have been amazed at the many years of talent. Hope HGTV brings us dreams for many years to come. Thank you HGTV.

    • All the noise is an annual rite of passage, nursejudyfromCA. Sometimes more, sometimes less, but the overwhelming majority of dreamers are willing to simply be happy for the winner and look forward to another Dream Home adventure that will start once again later this year.

Now, where oh where will HGTV take us? A dramatic lakeside retreat? A mountain high hideout? Another beachfront home hunt?

I'm thinking of a Southern California beachside beauty for more fun in the sun. I'll look into it and see what I can come up with.

      • Thanks Coop, appreciate you! I know, I've seen it in the past as well, but I think the rite of passage got out of control this time. Somehow, I always expect people to act kind and fair and be happy for others happiness, that's a nurse for you. All they needed to do was read the rules when they entered and there is no question as to what they agreed to by entering and about the about the process. Well off to our next dream.

Southern Beachside resort sounds good to me as well. :)

  159. The other night after reading this blog I went on fb. There was a picture of this little baby girl showing her struggle that day from chemo. She is only 4. I thought to myself how grateful I am to have a healthy child. How some people really have a hard road ahead of them. The mother of this child is a single mother. She had to leave her job so that she can transport her baby girl to and from the hospital for treatment. I couldn't believe that I even felt remotely sad for myself that I didn't win the house when others are out there hoping for much greater and better dreams like the health of their child. I think it would be such a great thing if Hgtv could build a dream house next to a children's hospital for families like the one I read about. Give up one or two of these drawings and do something great like that. Seeing that picture the other day sure puts a lot of things in perspective.

Every HGTV & DIY home giveaway has people jumping the gun, people claiming they are the winner/or neighbor/or friend, someone saying they won and everyone should give up on the dream, or someone using a name on the blog like "Dream Home winner". Most cases it is bogus. And every once in a while, the winner leaks and the local newspaper reports it online and beats HGTV to the punch. Could explain why HGTV/DIY Network has taken a more hands-off approach on the blog and no longer gives out clues to where the winner might be. It just makes people crazy on here.
Let's just relax and wait to see the winner here on HGTV.

  167. Wouldn't it be a shame if David Rennie had to forfeit the prize because Mark Smiles put out a spoiler alert. No sense airing the show now, Right? Show off!

Shannon on March 24, 2016 at 3:55 pm
    • God forbid that would happen! I believe Mr Rennie will retain the prize and HGTV will await his decision to keep the home or take the cash option! Tough decision with such a beautiful home and location. BPF did an amazing job with the Dream Home!

Samo on March 24, 2016 at 4:39 pm
  168. Just wanted to let everyone know that I got a email back from HGTV about when I contacted them about what was going on with the Dream Home about the winner being leaked, this is the reply that I got from them:

Thank you for contacting HGTV about the HGTV Dream Home Giveaway 2016. At this time, HGTV has selected and notified a potential winner. However, no further details will be provided until that person decides whether to accept the grand prize. Full details of the winner will be provided at HGTV Dream Home Central once a winner is fully confirmed.

Not sure why they answered like that because from the way that they worded the answer it makes it seem like the winner has not decided to accept the prize. I honestly do not think HGTV will make any type of statement about the winner's name being leaked and believe they will just ignore it.

    • Reading carefully the rules and such..the winner has to fill out/sign papers etc… and have 5 days to do so. I'm sure they have accepted but until the signed documents are returned and received, HGTV has to say the whole "if they accept" thing.

VFeliz on March 24, 2016 at 5:30 pm
      • I agree, though it also depends on the date the sign the papers as it says they have to be return within the 5 days. Not sure if they mean business days or if that includes weekend.

        panther_1935 on March 24, 2016 at 8:10 pm
    • Believe it or not, on game shows and through contests, some winners do decide not to accept the prize mainly because of not being able to pay the taxes. And even though there is a cash option here, winning can still turn into a frustrating and even nightmarish event.

  173. I have read an article of the home giveaway for this years house. It is the 20th anniversary and that this house giveaway was different and special. That the taxes was paid for. So I doubt that they are giving up the house for the cash. However, on the contrary, if someone does opt out for the cash, what does HGTV do with the house since it is paid for. In my opinion if and when someone opts out and takes the cash they should give the home to a second runner up. Because there are those that may really want the house. Just giving my opnion.

Darlyne on March 24, 2016 at 11:58 am
    • I read that article as the writers wishful thinking. It had no direct quotes from anyone involved with the sweepstakes.

      dreamn_again on March 24, 2016 at 12:16 pm
      • The HGTV Dream Home 2016 winner will be the 20th anniversary winner of one of the most popular contests of all time, and it would be exciting to know that the wildly popular home building show has some little extra in store for the winner this year that they have not advertised–like maybe they are going to pay those pesky winner taxes this time, so the winner can afford to keep the dream home if they want to. Got this info from this link.. http://www.examiner.com/article/hgtv-dream-home-2…. I don't know if this answers what I was trying to say or if this link is real or not. Just thought I'd share.

darlyne on March 24, 2016 at 12:52 pm
  174. There have been plenty of boring, average winners of the HGTV giveaway homes (no offense to previous winners). There have been rich and poor and winners of all ages. . I remember there were at least 2 in their early 20's, both single. There have been a few in their 30's and 40's–married and single. Some have been skinny, some have been overweight, some were tall, some were short. Skin color ranges from very white, nicely tanned– to very dark. I've been following the HGTV giveaway sweepstakes for over 15 years. It's discouraging and disheartening to me to see HGTV's Integrity being called into question. The background checks are to rule out criminals from being awarded the prize, as that would reflect badly. There is a generous cash option so I doubt they are looking for a person with a great credit score, large bank account, and assets. They also aren't purposely seeking folks who are down on their luck either. I am convinced it is 100 percent random, what HGTV does after that is none of my business. Thank you to HGTV for being so generous for 20 years. Thanks for good times HGTV.

    • Wow…a refreshing respite of sanity in a never-ending stream of negativity and conspiracy theories! Thanks for the level-headed response Cami. I too believe it is totally legitimate — they have an independent company conduct the drawing, for crying out loud. Would have loved to win, but am happy for this family. As others have pointed out, with the taxes being the winner's responsibility, I'm guessing the house will be on the market soon. Not that I could ever consider it, though. Cheers to all!

  176. If they picked the winner on March 22, 2016 how could they be at the winners church on Palm Sunday which was March 20, 2016 2 days before they supposedly picked the winner? Could be true but hope it is not.

    realdealu22 on March 24, 2016 at 11:22 am
    • There is no evidence they picked the winner on the 22nd. Maybe folks are misreading the blog posting date as the drawing date? They sent out an email on March 17th to many people that the winner was selected. The official rules gave a much earlier date for the drawing.

      dreamn_again on March 24, 2016 at 12:09 pm
      • The winner was picked prior to that. They sent out an email on Thursday, 17 March.

  177. Wow, I can't believe what I am reading. The negativity here is shameful. I don't know if majority is just entitled, bad loser's or just ungrateful people who can't appreciate the fact that here is a wonderful corp. and TV show that is "gifting" someone a new home! Geez people! Seriously find some gratitude in your heart's that you even have the opportunity to be involved in someone giving away a gorgeous home, car, boat, etc. Some people would love to even win a bag of groceries!!

Joan Gandara on March 24, 2016 at 11:01 am
    • Joan, you don't get the point. It's not being ungrateful. It's called questioning the integrity of something that has established a pattern of winner selection in the past twenty years of the 'Dream Home'! If you fall into a certain category then of course it may be difficult to understand the majority of those who don't. I'm not here to convince you. But I will stand up for the underdogs that are perhaps being misled!

Seems like every winner has always came from the northern states and I don't understand why Alabama has only had one winner…. I entered over 800 entries by mail plus online and still no such luck… I guess there's always next year….. Maybe….congrats!!!!

  180. Even if Mr Rennie cannot afford to keep the house, he can opt for the cash option for the house. He still gets the $250,000, the car, and the boat if he opts to take it. After taxes, he will have approx. $600,000 give or take a few more dollars. The rules did state that things are subject to change. According to the rules, they give the winner 5 days to get their paperwork in order. The thing about it being posted by a bystander, o well, that is the luxury we have of todays technology. So stop whinning and crying. Congratulations Mr. Rennie, enjoy.

Darlyne on March 24, 2016 at 11:53 am
      • Unfortunately taxes are required, that is what runs our government. There is a check generously provided by one of the sponsors which can help pay the taxes, but the winner also pays taxes on the cash. It's the law, not a contest rule.

nursejudyfromCA on March 24, 2016 at 9:38 pm
      • According to the rules ALL taxes are paid by the winner. There is a Tax on the house, the car, the boat, and the money. Also, insurance, titles, deeds, and closing cost for the house are all paid by the winner. The only way the winner doesn't have to pay is if they do not accept it. There is a cash option for the house, like I previous wrote, there is a tax on that.

Can you feel it!!!!!! I do. Has everyone forgotten about the construction worker that was electrocuted and died. I do BELIEVE we have a restless spirit on our hands. SO MUCH NEGATIVITY. DO NOT FEED IT. I believe in this! Mr. Rennie have your Dream Home BLESSED before you and your family move in or who ever buy's it. I'm not coming back to this blog.

  183. I'm happy for the Rennie's. They seem like good people that have gone through a lot. Its's just discouraging, for me, that people are saying that HGTV has the right to choose whomever they want, does this mean that it shouldn't be random? If that is the case, why even bother entering. I personally do not have a story that even comes close to the Rennie's. I am just a single mom who works full time and goes to school and tries to make ends meet. I have iffy credit because of identity theft. With a story like mine there is no chance of me ever being chosen to win if, as people are saying, HGTV has the right to choose based on people's experiences and how it makes HGTV look or based on credit, race, economic class, or age. I feel like until HGTV proves differently I will not even bother wasting my time or getting excited about the possibility of winning.

    joliv7606 on March 24, 2016 at 6:52 am
  184. If this is how HGTV chooses their winners, then they should have a comment box when you first enter so you can sell your story to them. Man, I can't believe this sweepstakes is fake! I have been entering for over ten years!! What a waste of time. HGTV congrats on your choice.

    Dani78 on March 24, 2016 at 5:57 am
    • I've been entering for about 18. If this is how they choose winners I'm done

      joliv7606 on March 24, 2016 at 6:56 am
    • I'm a little confused. I thought the winner this year was chosen through a random drawing, as they have always chosen a winner. HGTV has always played up the winner's story if the winner has gone through some type of hardship, and it is unfortunate that the winner's name was leaked online. But what evidence is there that the sweepstakes is fake?

Dannyboy on March 24, 2016 at 9:57 am
      • To the contrary what evidence do they provide that it's really random without discrimination? Is it not discrimination to pick a random winner that does not meet HGTV'S tv image? Does a picture of a drawing prove it's real? If so that's an easy sell, is it not? In today's society everything has to be questioned for it's validity. To think otherwise is naive, yes? So to believe it's what they say it is would require faith in their integrity. So if it's faith that makes you believe it's really as random as they say it is (or do they?), would require to believe everything written by a business is true without question etc…

Samo on March 24, 2016 at 10:33 am
      • It is just my option, and I have no evidence. Just common sense that the reveal show needs to have a good story, and I believe that they most likely select at random a handful of winners and then based on their background or social media page choose a winner in that way. It makes for good TV because someone in need wins and everyone else watching is happy for them. That's all, it feels very calculated and not real. It is their rules, good for them.

        Dani78 on March 24, 2016 at 10:42 am
        • Well that would be disheartening for some. I for one am not really active on social media (facebook, twitter, instagram, etc…), I have accounts but rarely use them. I don't feel that I need to publicize my hardships to everyone for vindication. I enter contest with the understanding and hope that they are done on an equal ground (deep down most know they probably aren't), but that what keeps the spirit of the "dream" alive I guess??

        • Social media (Twitter, FB, Blogs, Etc.) should not drive the decision to select the winner. Some people aren't even on those – should that limit their chances to win if they have taken the time and money to mail in entries per the rules or online entries. It should be the first name drawn who passes the criminal background check. It is just very sad if it truly is a selection process and not just a random luck of the draw from a pile of entries. I agree if it is a selection process based on need and story why not let that be fully know up front and include that as part of the entry.

It is HGTV's and the Sponsor's to give away. I just think they should respect all the millions out there hoping and entering whether they be young, old, race, religion, etc. and be transparent in the actually "drawing/selection" process.

She is disabled and I have several health issues,1 I have been in remission from for some time. But it is the idea and the "dream" that keeps contest like this alive, and the way that this was handled and the silence on HGTV's behalf given the blog is what I think is the overwhelming issue here.

  194. I still feel something isn't right…There would have been A lot more posts IMO in this day & age especially if it happened at a church. Also, HGTV is too crafty to let someone make a random fb post about it. If it was "breaking the rules" wouldn't they have asked the gentleman to kindly remove it. Then leaked photos (where you can only see her reflection in the camera). Then 2 more pictures today. Hmmmm….I don't think its over yet!!!

    ABCDEFG76 on March 23, 2016 at 8:14 pm
    • I really do not know what to think, but what has me confused is why did they put up this blog when the drawing did not happen recently. From looking at past sweepstakes when they used to so this type of blog, they usually put it up shortly after the drawing. I really do believe Dave Rennie is the winner and the way it was revealed left a bad taste in my mouth as they say.

    • I was thinking the same thing – not very surprised and not really happy in several pictures. Maybe the ambush was earlier than Sunday or at their house that morning and HGTV just filmed and took pictures at the church later to tell more of their story for the TV presentation??

Whisper on March 24, 2016 at 8:56 am
  197. It is what it is. Everyone is going to have their opinion. I would have liked it as well given my history as well, but don't my "sob story" out here for comment. It is just bad taste for it to be revealed this way and before the date expressed in the rules stated by the sweepstakes.

Gandomel on March 23, 2016 at 7:32 pm
  198. I've spent a lot of time thinking about this and came to a few conclusions: Ultimately, this is all at HGTV's discretion and clearly they don't care. I do wish the Rennie's friends and church wouldn't have leaked the story. I wish the winner wouldn't have liked and commented on the leak which for me is equal to confirming. I hope in the future we get to find out the winner by HGTV (whether that be a big reveal or a knock on the door lol). Still, this doesn't mean disqualification for the current winners.

The clause of "sponsor's discretion" means if HGTV/Scripps doesn't say it is against the rules, then it isn't against the rules. Bad taste to reveal before HGTV? Yes. Inconsiderate of the thousands or millions waiting for the big reveal? Yes. Rule breaking? Not if the "sponsor's discretion" doesn't say so. HGTV definitely won't ruin the almost made for tv perfection of the Rennie family as winners. Not going to happen. So "sponsor's discretion" in this case means no rules were broken.

Really then, that doesn't leave room for much else besides showing the Rennie's some grace and offering congratulations to them. Congratulations to the Rennie family and many happy returns!

JustSaying on March 23, 2016 at 7:21 pm
  199. Has anyone ever read the rules closely? It basically says that HGTV reserves the right to disqualify anyone they feel would reflect poorly on them or their sponsors and that they may choose as many potential winners as they want… As others have suggested, it seems like every year the winner is always the exact demographic that HGTV targets and has some wonderful story that makes everyone feel all warm and fuzzy. It's certainly possible that it's all just coincidence, but it's not hard to believe that they could be "hand picking" winners via the loophole highlighted above.

    • Yes, I've read the rules and unfortunately I have to agree. I was hopeful that every entry was given the same opportunity to be chosen but this just seems a little bit too hand chosen. And if only others had known that we should all post our trials the week of the drawing! Well played Rennie!

Ellen on March 23, 2016 at 7:42 pm
    • I disagree. If anything drawing Rennie as the winner may have given them pause as they considered how a widely publicized story of a medical nature may distract from the purpose of the HGTV Dream Home sweeps. But being the upstanding classy people they are HGTV decided not to punish Rennie for having a medical problem, but instead decided to award the first drawn winner the prize. I've been following this sweeps for over 15 years. I have read the rules many times and have followed every award and can tell you with absolute certainty that HGTV is on the up and up. They follow all the national rules regarding the administration of sweepstakes. The line in the rules regarding who they choose has to do with criminals as they wouldn't want to award the home to someone who reflects poorly on HGTV. I can also tell you there have been plenty of boring HGTV dream home winners (no offense to previous winners). Now stop stomping your sour grapes, they are done!!

Cami on March 23, 2016 at 8:09 pm
    • It would be awesome to see a young 20-something single person living in a tiny studio apartment win the dream home so they could potentially own their first home and start a family. It always seems to be an upper middle class family that wins who is just adding a second home to their life. You might say that the majority of HGTV viewers fit that category so perhaps that is the majority of who enters the contest. But one has to wonder if maybe HGTV conducts a credit check along with their background check, and then disqualifies people on those results figuring they cannot take on the burden of the property and income taxes that result from winning. That would be extremely sad and disappointing, but it seems a pattern of winners has developed.

Guest on March 24, 2016 at 1:59 am
      • Not too long ago, there was a winner one of the other home contests, maybe the Urban Oasis or Green Home, who was a college student. The Urban Oasis is usually around 1 million and the Green Home (I think it's now called the Smart Home) is a few hundred thousand. Maybe the Dream Home contest does not get many younger people entering it.

Dannyboy on March 24, 2016 at 10:06 am
        • The college guy won the HGTV Urban Oasis in New York City. He entered only once only because his mother told him to enter.

        • One of the Florida dreamhomes a few years ago was won by a young family from Ohio. They had a baby and a preschooler.

nursejudyfromCA on March 24, 2016 at 9:24 pm
      • It is not HGTV's burden to decide if the potential winner can afford to win…when you enter, you agree to the rules which state that you need to pay taxes and fees before claiming the prize. If you can't do it, then you should not enter. The cash option makes winning viable for many more people than just winning the house outright. Many do not enter the Blog Cabin because there is no cash option. It is a scary prospect to have a house that you need to sell sooner than yesterday in order to realize the money. And we all cheer for the underdog. Winning the dream home cash option would make me and my family debt-free and leave some left to make our own home just the way we want (second bathroom would be nice…). And, while life changing, that would use up nearly all of the prize money. I would not deny someone who is older, settled and adding a second home to their life the joy of winning. I don't believe this contest is rigged or managed in any way to provide awesome stories. I do believe that an incarcerated entrant would be disqualified.

Kimberly on March 24, 2016 at 10:20 am
        • Of course someone whom is or has been a criminal would lead to disqualification! I'd be the first to agree with that. How old are you Kimberly? Approximately age will work just as well.

Samo on March 24, 2016 at 10:40 am
          • Older with two college-aged kids and associated costs, a mortgage, car payment and credit cards, two jobs and fortunately good health all around! We were debt-free for a few years so I know what it is like to be that way, but life happens….second chances and a dream to have it happen again? That's why I am happy for anyone who wins because they have their own story and deserve something happy, too!

Kimberly on March 24, 2016 at 11:48 am
      • It's simply not the case that upper middle class families win. One winner was an older woman from New Orleans who had lost her home in Katrina. One was a young family. One was a disabled older man. many different people have won the Dream Home in the last 20 years.

Sandra on March 24, 2016 at 2:46 pm
      • I entered everyday twice a day for the entire contest. I am a 30 yr old college grad who works two jobs just to pay off my student loan debt and afford a tiny apartment. I would've love to win a life changing home like this, but HGTV does run a credit check and they do have a right as stated in their rules to decide if a winner should be disqualified. Unfortunately for me my credit score is on the low end from one late payment on my student loans. Working hard to build it back up, but they probably just see numbers and risk factors. Congrats to the winner, maybe by the time I'm their age I'll be able to afford a home too ha

    • I have been entering the Dream Home Contest for a few years now and there have been winners who did not have medical problems or severe financial problems that would make us feel all warm and fuzzy for the winner. One of the Florida dream homes a few years ago was won by a young family from Ohio. Unless HGTV has started rigging things in the last couple of years, I think the drawing is random and not fixed.

  201. I think the ambush has to be well prepared and how do they know where and when to ambush the winner. Winner can be out grocery shopping. I think the "filmed" ambush is preplanned and. I dont think they just pop up at your house . they have to know if the winner is home. So im assuming there has to be some initial contact before any ambush. Lol

Natalie on March 23, 2016 at 6:56 pm
  202. As much as I wanted that dream home I believe it went to the right family. Things happen for a reason. Congrats to them! Who cares if it was leaked! So we all found out a week early… Again, congrats to the family. May you enjoy all these wonderful and exciting moments!

  203. It seems the whole thing is fraudulent….why was the winner known before date HGTV told the public the winning name? HGTV VIOLATED THEIR OWN RULES. I'm not entering anymore or supporting any of their sponsors.

    Sap709 on March 23, 2016 at 6:48 pm
  204. Something to ponder…Yesterday someone with many postings made a comment on the "Dreams Happen" blog regarding the demographics of the dream home winners in particular and the fact that in recent years the drawings had become less transparent. Right after this post was made, HGTV posted this 2012 video showing how they picked the winners and included current pictures. The comments and blogger were deleted and ever since then it's seemed rather suspicious to me. It's interesting that Mr. Rennie has such an amazing story to coincide with the drawing and that he recently posted on Twitter that he was out of work. Maybe coincidence? Maybe just a great story for the 20th dream home giveaway? Personally, I am suspicious. Sour grapes? Maybe, or maybe realistic in this day and age of good publicity and ratings.

Frank on March 23, 2016 at 6:50 pm
        • I remember that comment are you saying that HGTV removed the comment or did the blogger remove it. I also feel that HGTV has to make some type of statement about what is going on because if they ignore the issue it will get worse.

          • I can't be sure if HGTV removed the comment and the blogger or if they deleted themselves. BUT, the timing was very suspicious and although they had been an active blogger they were completely removed. I thought that they had a well written post and brought up some valid points. After learning more today it seems even more suspect. This sweepstakes is a life changer and should be transparent and fair to all. If there is nothing to hide then why not just put it all out there? And what about the relationship between Scripps and HGTV? Idk, I just wonder if it's as random as they would have us believe??

Frank on March 23, 2016 at 7:05 pm
          • So you are saying that the blogger was totally removed, do you remember their name? I did not see anything wrong with their post as it was their opinion

          • Yes, they were totally removed. I can't remember their name but it was something Bear. Mawbear or something like that. They had a lot of ratings. I know the post but they are gone and it says, "deleted by user" or something similar. Not so sure that I'm sold on that either? Just all seems so suspicious. And that is the EXACT same time that HGTV put up the post regarding how the winner is picked.

It is picture 37 and 38.

    CarSan26 on March 23, 2016 at 6:27 pm
  206. What's crazy about all this negative ideology of disqualification towards the winner is nothing but hate and JEALOUSY! Happy for the winner just not so happy towards HGTV how they handle things. After all these years HGTV, especially, the 20th anniversary you should've nailed this ambush and then followed up appropriately with the proper message. This photo of Tiffany should've followed the drawing when it occurred. NOT after the ambush. Who at HGTV makes these decisions? Kathleen Finch? As Donald Trump would say, "You're Fired"! HGTV, you just need to do BETTER with these ambushes no excuses! After 20 of these and you still can't get it right? UNACCEPTABLE.

CONGRATS TO THE WINNER! Nothing should be taken away from such good people!

Samo on March 23, 2016 at 6:18 pm
    • Good points…but i don't think it is about jealousy…It is about being fair, .and there are some questions that need to be answered by HGTV. In time we will see.

  208. From my personal point of view, I'm sure HGTV would PREFER that the ambush and winner info NOT be leaked before they are ready to make the official announcement. But hey, we live in a world of instant communication and stuff happens. I'm no less happy about the outcome, leaked or otherwise.

Furthermore, some important things to keep in mind: It is ONLY the Dream Home winner, AFTER the ambush takes place AND AFTER the winner signs and returns the legal documents to HGTV within the required 5 days from the date of issuance of prize notification/ambush that the Non-Disclosure Agreement is legally binding. Others who witness the ambush, be they family, friends or casual passersby are NOT bound by such a requirement, though they MAY (or may not) be politely asked by HGTV at the time to withhold publishing the news on social media.

Remember, HGTV does not approach the winner, plunk down a non-disclosure agreement to sign, then turn on the cameras to "surprise" the winner with news they've won the Dream Home. Nope, the cameras roll, the winner is given the news and at some point thereafter the paperwork is provided to the winner, with the specified 5 day window in which to sign and return the documents.

If, as has happened before, the winner info is leaked at the time of the ambush or immediately after, that's life. Yep, that's life, and as funny as it may seem, some people get so excited they can't help but spill the beans. But don't let it, no don't let get you down, 'cause this fine ole dream'll keep comin' back around!

As for HGTV, the lesson may be to remember in the future that the main objective of any religion or church is "to spread the news!" Clearly, if the powers-that-be at HGTV are concerned about the risks of early disclosure, they might choose not to "ambush" the winner in a public venue. Trial and error. Live and learn.

The bottom line: Don't worry. Be happy. I'll look forward just as eagerly to the followup official announcement and Dream Home 2016 Winner's Ambush TV Special along with video of the Rennie's first visit to their awesome Merritt Island Grand Prize Package.

One more very important comment: CONGRATULATIONS to Dave Rennie and family! Well done, well deserved, and may you live long and prosper!

  215. DISQUALIFICATION!! These people had pictures on their church web site sense the 20th. Their should be some blow back from this, other wise how can HGTV confirm everything was during the drawing was on the up and up. I call Disqualification!!

Dee on March 23, 2016 at 3:55 pm
    • Surely HGTV knew about the people there and the church as well taking pictures on their own. If they did not want it leaked before hand I would think they would have told the people and/or church before hand to not take pictures or had them sign agreements not to disclose or distribute any photos, comments, etc before HGTV / Sponsor making the announcement.

As long as the drawing was handled randomly without regard to age, race, religion, or circumstance and no rules were broken, I think HGTV will learn from this and handle the next ambush more secretly so as to truly surprise the winner and followers here. What ever happened to the simple, yet surprising knock at the door – "Are you Mr/Ms X. ? You won!" It has become such a production that it is starting to take away the joy. Last year took forever, followers on the blogs were getting disgruntled and this year it was leaked almost as soon as it happened.

So many times in the rules it says at the Sponsor's discretion so who knows how they will interpret this. I think they will award it as it is to Dave who seems to have been through a rough time the last few years (like so many of us) and move on to the Smart Home with some eyes opened for the next drawing.

  223. Do you all think HGTV knows Rennie broke the rules? Wonder if HGTV reads their blog? Perhaps HGTV should be contacted about this……

Pamela on March 23, 2016 at 2:46 pm
  224. This is just my honest opinion and I feel like HGTV should disqualify the winner as if they do not then it looks bad on them for allowing the winner to break the rules and yes I know that technically Dave Rennie did not confirm he was the winner, he did comment on his friends comment about him winning and also liked his comment and that is basically the same thing as confirming. If anyone disagrees with that, please comment why someone should be awarded when breaking rules.

    panther_1935 on March 23, 2016 at 2:00 pm
    • I agree, however, I don't see in the rules that you aren't allowed to tell anyone???

Maggie on March 23, 2016 at 2:39 pm
      • Why would they want you to sign a non-disclosure agreement if not telling anyone is in the agreement. What would be the point of a non-disclosure?

        panther_1935 on March 23, 2016 at 2:41 pm
    • Why does it matter, If they played the competition and won fairly… They should be able to claim the prize, Yes I wish I had won but I am happy for the Rennie family, we all have problems and thankfully God has chosen this way to Bless him.

    • Panther, I've never seen the rules nor have I been fortunate enough to win. However, I choose to look pass the church members celebrating the wonderful win of their brother. Why not rejoice when he is abundantly blessed after enduring so many struggles in the past? As for David's comment, I see nothing wrong with responding when one is overwhelmed by such a great blessing. He probably didn't think about the rules because he was caught up in the excitement and joy of the moment. I'm happy for him and his family. Would I have been overjoyed to win this wonderful prize, you betcha! So I choose to virtually celebrate with David and his family even though I'll never meet them.

Lessie on March 23, 2016 at 5:28 pm
      • Everyone too wants to celebrate the win with the winner but there is also a time to follow the official rules outlined which we all accepted when we entered the contest. When a football player goes to make his first touchdown, yet drops the ball just shy of the line to dance for joy and exhibition in front of the crowd no one let's that go. No one says oh he was just so happy and rejoicing – let's all rejoice with him and go ahead and give him the touchdown and award the points. The touchdown would not count because he failed to carry the ball over the line per the rules of the game. You have to think about the rules when they were given equally to everyone and so many are invested in this wonderful HGTV opportunity.

I believe everyone feels joy and thanksgiving that Dave and Meg are having a wonderful recovery after their surgeries and extend that joy to him for being chosen the winner of another great gift. They just want to know that the rules that HGTV / Sponsor outlined at the beginning of the contest are followed for all of the millions out there who agreed to following them when they submitted their entries.

    • If HGTV notified the winner in a public place, then there is no reasonable assumption of secrecy. IMHO, the winner didn't break any rules and we can all cheerfully congratulate him and his family. We can now focus our attention to the next home giveaway and on all of the fun to be had dreaming of being the next winner.

    • I'm more disappointed that 1 it was at a church. 2. That the church found it appropriate that it was posted on their website. 3. How ungrateful some are acting that this family won.
We all have issues. Heck I've seen more than my share. However I am not mad he won. I'm happy for him. Sure I wish it was me.

Pamela on March 23, 2016 at 1:54 pm
      • My issue is not with him being the winner and I am not acting ungrateful that they won. I was taught if you break the rules then you should not be awarded. Their was a non disclosure agreement and he broke it by commenting on his friend's comment. If it had just been the friends that fine but he is the one that commented on the post.

        panther_1935 on March 23, 2016 at 2:07 pm

          dreamn_again on March 23, 2016 at 2:20 pm
          • True, but I am sure that HGTV did not want this information released this way and why have a non disclosure agreement if HGTV does not want the winner to comment on their win before HGTV announces it.

            panther_1935 on March 23, 2016 at 2:33 pm
        • I feel ya! I'm a army wife and I've learned the hard way that the rules don't apply to everyone! My 19 year old told me this today and I hate to admit it.. She stated, "mom you are more mad that you didn't win! Yes it's really messed up and not fair. However excitement can make you do things without thinking." Being a mother of a 27, 19 and 4 year old you never want to hear your child point things out. It's true the guy messed up. What's more messed up is the church. I don't think it was appropriate. I would think they would've been asked to keep quiet. Does this change my views about hgtv no… We all make mistakes. What makes us a better person is to learn from them.

Pamela on March 23, 2016 at 2:23 pm

Secret reveal fail….but how is it HGTV is so stealth on everything up to this point with no clues, updates etc and then this is leaked ,well, rather casually via social media with little damage control????
The pics are "official" enough for me, so what's next ….the smart home….see ya there folks!

luluslove on March 23, 2016 at 5:05 pm
    • Nice pics. I see the HGTV Dream Home license plate on the GMC. CONGRATS! Now can we leave the family alone? It's not their fault it was leaked and they shouldn't be disqualified. HGTV are very smart people. They know everyone carries phones these days. Of course photos are going to be taken! This church is so happy for their member. If anyone is to blame for the leak its HGTV for doing the ambush style award not the family who won. Congrats to the family now let's move on. Hugs.

Geeta on March 23, 2016 at 2:02 pm
      • My issue is not with the family and the winner did break the non disclosure agreement by commenting on his friends post. Yes, previous ambush have been leaked before but I have never seen it leaked like this before and will say that if you looked at previous ambushes that have been done in public, like last year's it was not leaked. Because most people have common sense not to post on the Internet. I mean the winner's own church posted pictures of the event. That church should have known better than to do that.

  228. Just thinking… which sometimes leads to trouble!

With over 127,000,000 Dream Home 2016 entries to randomly draw one lucky name from, the odds of winning are, shall we say, kind of slim! Nonetheless, someone DOES win, and as they say, hope springs eternal.

Still, with that number of entries within a 52 day period, that's an average of around 2,450,000 entries PER DAY! Wow!! Faced with that kind of competition, what's a dreamer to do?

Well, HGTV, consider this: award more prizes! Yep, to keep the steam in the dream, here's a plausible scenario: Obviously, continue with the Dream Home Grand Prize Package. That's a proven money-maker and big-time interest shaker. Ah, but add in even MORE excitement to the mix by offering dreamers the chance to win other prizes.

It could go something like this: Once the Grand Prize winner's name is drawn, follow up by drawing names for a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th prize. They might be as follows: 1st prize: a tiny house valued at $40k plus $10,000 cash to purchase a lot to place it on. 2nd prize: a new car valued at $35k. 3rd prize: kitchen makeover with a value of $25k. 4th prize: landscape makeover, valued at $15k. 5th prize: vacation plus $2,500 cash with total value of $10,000. All prizes could have a cash option.

We're not done yet, though! There would be 7 weekly drawings for a $1,000 cash prize, with the winners announced during the sweepstakes entry period. These 'early bird' drawing winners would still be eligible to win the Grand Prize or 1st-5th prizes at the end of the entry period.

Okay, don't panic yet, HGTV. It's just an idea blowing in the wind…. ^_^

        • DBCoop, Do you know if there is an email address for HGTV Dream Home Sweepstakes? Anyone?

LoLo on March 24, 2016 at 3:06 pm
    • It seems like a few years ago they did do something like this (drew prizes during the entry period) The prizes weren't quite as grand as your ideas, but more like winning duplicates of items that were featured in the dream home. Seems to me someone won a doggie dream home ? Anyways, I remember hoping that they didn't call me. Because if I was drawn for the doggy dream home, I would feel certain that the odds my name would be drawn for the grand prize would be nil. I know, of course, that mathematically that my odds wouldn't change, but still. It would be the end of my dreaming.
Maybe your idea of the prizes given away after the grand prize winner revealed would be cool. No matter how bummed you are about not winning, a little cash would be fun for anyone

Jenny on March 23, 2016 at 3:38 pm
    • Coop, you are a hot mess! Had to laugh at the tiny house valued at $40k plus $10,000 cash to purchase a lot to place it on. Eugenia would probably love that. The tiny house could lead to her earth home. All the other prizes were reasonable. Let's hope HGTV agrees with you. :)

    • i wish you worked for the HGTV board!! I like the way you think… its a little unreal, just ONE winner of ALL the enteries?? I mean we hold our breathe, we glue our selves to the computer, we hang on to what seams to be a strand of hope to win this beautiful place, and of all of the dreamers/participants, only ONE!?!? Makes me sad… and this was only my 1st year! Can't imagine doing this to my self another 20+ years… Ok Im done crying…. when can we start entering for the house in Raleigh?

      CarSan26 on March 23, 2016 at 6:43 pm
    • Hi DBCoop ! Always enjoyed your posts but the $40K tiny house + $10K for land would really limit those that would want to enter. Have watched those shows and know that I could not stay in there very long. Much too small to live in and try to have several changes of clothing let alone storage for food. Maybe that would lower the number of entries so the odds of winning would be better. oh well, just blogging– . Wish everyone a lot of fun . Wish you and everyone a pleasant evening .
      P. S. I still wonder if the winner really has been chosen !

Grammynan on March 23, 2016 at 8:04 pm
    • Sounds really nice, but isn't the point of the Dream Home to showcase design talent and products? Offering more prizes costs a lot of money. I am not sure HGTV has a ton of extra cash to use for that purpose.

Prize Terms: Sponsor and Sweepstakes Administrator’s decisions with respect to the Grand Prize Winner and other matters pertaining to the Sweepstakes shall be final and binding. By entering into the Sweepstakes, each entrant consents to the use by Sponsor and Participating Parties and their designees of entrant’s name, photograph, likeness, biography, voice, performance and/or video for advertising and promotional purposes including Participating Parties’ content in any and all media (including online announcements) now or hereafter known, throughout the universe in perpetuity without additional compensation, notification or permission, except where prohibited by law. 232. I have to believe if they did surprise him at Church- it would be all over social media and pictures from outsiders etc would also have commented- not just one person as they all would have been witnesses to the event- I have to agree- nothing against this family if they are the winners- but according to the rules they should be disqualified due to leakage of social media- But lets hope that one selfish person leaking to social media did not ruin things or that this is not the actual case.

I see nothing wrong with it! In fact, I'd be happy to receive a blessing, warm words of encouragement, and genuine joyful comments from true friends and family!

Lessie on March 23, 2016 at 4:48 pm
      • Lessie, I do see your point but the church should have waited to share the news online since HGTV wants to reveal the winner themselves. My issue is that the winner should not have commented on his friend's comment. He knows that he broke the rules because he has removed the comments and I do not understand why HGTV does not make any statements about what is going on.

        panther_1935 on March 23, 2016 at 5:06 pm
        • I understand what you're saying but I truly doubt HGTV would disqualify David for his friends actions. However, I see church family as family. To me, his spiritual family was celebrating his win on their facebook page. They probably never thought the great HGTV blogger sleuths would find and reveal their conversations. Just goes to show how talented and resourceful our wonderful bloggers are! :)

        • Guest, you make a legitimate point. I think you should share your views with HGTV.

As for the football example, Rennie had crossed the line for the score when HGTV contacted him! So, his celebration in my mind was not premature. His church family had walked with him during the stressful times so why shouldn't they celebrate his wonderful win? But this is my personal opinion and I don't expect all bloggers to agree with it. If HGTV asked my opinion, I'd say let him keep his prize! ……as long as my name was drawn for the next home giveaway! :)

Lessie on March 24, 2016 at 4:46 pm
          • Thank you for sharing your point of view with me Lessie. I guess I see it as HGTV's call/ambush is when he got the ball. The touchdown is not complete until all the paperwork (t' s crossed and I' s dotted) is in order and turned in. Only when the ump declares a touchdown (HGTV announces publicly/officially) does the team get the points and the crowd celebrate with the team (all the public congratulations begin).

I am not saying friends and family should not celebrate together for such an occasion but privately until it is publicly announced to all officially.

Hope there are no hard feelings. Best wishes on the next round ;)

Curious to see HGTV' s announcement in light of all of the discussions.

        • What I see is nothing about them winning the house, posted 3-16-16 1t says: Special Prayers of Thanksgiving for Dave & Meg this Sunday! Celebrating one year of successful kidney donation & transplant. I don't think they won and it's just a decoy to the real winner!

          • If you go to church website in their gallery they have two pictures up showing Tiffany Brooks with the family and one of them is in front of the GMC car with Dream Home on it.

  236. why would they post a picture of the drawing when we know who the winner is? Shouldn't they have posted we surprised the winner and check back in next week for information. maybe they post this because of comment made in blog of last one. what are you doing hgtv?

Samo on March 23, 2016 at 10:04 am
  237. I hope this is wrong on the leak of saying the Rennie family won. I guess I am a little selfish because I want to win this house so very much. I will wait until next week with the official winner. I do not understand why they drew the name yesterday when in the rules it states that they would draw between march 23 and April 11. A little uneasy about that but I am not the one giving it away. Congratulations to who ever wins this spectacular house, car and boat.

  239. Why do someone's goofy friends have to leak something and ruin it for everyone? Why we all sit here waiting and hoping to see who wins some stooge ruins it.

Josie on March 23, 2016 at 9:38 am
  240. If they drew the winner March 22nd, Why are the Rennie FB posts dated March 20th?? Sounds pretty rigged to me. And if they did win it ruins the surprise and waiting for all of us by being leaked!

  243. I dont believe they won how is it you only see it in two places thats it no where else and they said they were surprized on sunday the official rules are not contacting any until March 21- april 11, 2016 so there is no way he could have been surprized on Sunday at church because Sunday was the 20th, i cant believe until i see it.

  254. Such an exciting day today……. I was observed at work to make sure that I am teaching well… even after 16 years of teaching. It was a fun day presenting pictures of the Medieval Era and the students came up with sooo many great questions and started research. I do have to admit I couldn't wait to check HGVT to see if the winner was chosen. I hope that the information is not leaked in one day….. I am still hopeful and want to share this picture of this beautiful home near NASA…… to my students and of coarse my own family…. husband, daughter and son.
    Still dreaming…… the American Way
    Blessings to Belgium

The video that is shown if you go under today's picture, was OLD. The date 2012 is shown on the banner. Think they felt something had to be done with all the calmer going on here on the blog. Wish everyone a peaceful day and send my very best to all.

    • This blog no longer reports current info. on these homes. The photos of the builds are posted after the home is staged. Blog posts come weeks after being available on the home page. The drawing was announced a week after it happened. The winner has already been announced, as is often the case, through social media weeks before it appears here. I doubt anyone even reads our posts anymore. Virginia seems to have a schedule and sticks with it no matter what is happening in the real world.

The winner has already been ambushed as their friends posted that he was ambushed this past Sunday at church. I also got the same email that everyone is talking about on Friday that said a winner would be notified soon. Not sure why HGTV does not just announce winner if the winner friends posted on facebook

    • I don't get it? if she did it today March 22. then how do they come up with the Rennie family.???? If drawn today then winner has not been ambushed yet.. get my drift. I received the same email on 3/17 of the surprise the winner any day. Rumors hurt the truth doesn't… I hope the Rennie family did win it none more deserving than anyone else we all had the same equal chance. If it was leaked the drawing was drawn earlier than 22nd. I hope the surprise is not totally ruined for every one. I like most had hoped HGTV would be making the announcement, That disappoints me that if it was leaked it would unfair to the winner and to all of us. As rules are rules………. Wanting for next week for the HGTV announcement

        panther_1935 on March 22, 2016 at 4:47 pm
    • The blog post doesn't say she picked the winner on March 22nd. Where did you come up with that? It says "recently".

      dreamn_again on March 22, 2016 at 3:55 pm
    • Sometime Iam a habitual optimist…. But something's don't add up.
First the cat let out of the bag, I don't think hgtv would allow that. Maybe Iam wrong. Rennies sound like deserving people.
Second there was a giveaway on gmc website. Which was associated with hgtv.maybe the Rennies won the car? Maybe that's how Dave can comment on his post.
Along with we never saw photo of that infamous check which would proclaim Rennies as winners. I did see post that mr smiles congratulated Rennes so not sure if it is a matter of legal documents why it hasn't been announced or is hgtv trying to stump the detectives online?

iamflourishing on March 22, 2016 at 3:02 pm

        • That was a bad..really bad decision to announced the winner on the Ambush team…bad decision on their part..you are not supposed to conduct business at your church?? ..what was HGTV thinking? This should have been done at a more private place…Tiffany Brooks and the Ambush team is at fault here for ruining….the big surprise..this is why I don't enter these kind of sweepstakes..they are not real…

guest on March 27, 2016 at 2:45 pm
      • It wasn't detective work at all. The reveal was leaked. I literally put in HGTV Dream Home 2016 in the FB search box to see if any clues had been posted from HGTV as in previous years. On the official dream home page there was an announcement in the comments. The friends of the winner announced on various Facebook pages. Also the winner commented on one of the announcements essentially confirming it. Several other bloggers had similar experiences. I would NEVER search for the winner as I look forward to the reveal and clues. This was ruined for me by the leak and the winner. Congrats to them tho….

JustSaying on March 22, 2016 at 3:11 pm
        • I'm not sure what is going on as I am not sure why HGTV is waiting if everyone already knows the winner(if it is true and not a prank) and it also ruined it for me as the main reason I enter is hope that I can take the cash option so that my mother can get her wish before she dies about moving to Oregon or Washington.

          panther_1935 on March 22, 2016 at 5:01 pm
        • I am surprised. Often the winners are sworn to secrecy until HGTV makes it public. Usually something has to be signed. But in this day in age social media is FAST and HUGE! If this is truly the winner, God bless and make a smart prayerful decision on the house or the money. it would be heartbreaking if they family ended up loosing the house after a few years.

      • Me too , for years trying to win, and this time spent over 200.00 dollars mailing in entries along with the two online entries daily. I was so sure that this time I could actually win which would make perfect sense as to how I landed in Merritt Island two years ago and now the dream home is here. I even went to stand outside of it a few times to soak in the energy of it, and took pictures and made them my wallpaper on my cell to look st every day, trying to also use the law of attraction. I think I am finally going to give up. I'm starting to believe it is NOT a random drawing, but a chosen one.

Lisa Faires on March 25, 2016 at 9:59 pm
        • I believe his name was chosen not random either?? Usually these kind of contests are rigged..now I truly believe they are..not random?? If he worked for HGTV is he still getting royalty checks..hmmmm?? One wonders??…

guest on March 28, 2016 at 2:20 pm
          • I believe the drawing was fair but have an issue with the fact that HGTV is not addressing the issue with the leak. I do congratulate the winner but in my honest opinion if he did not have such a good story then he would have been disqualified for posting on facebook. Because HGTV has not address the issue of the leak, it looks bad on them because they are ignoring the issue. Also they could have just come out last week and confirm that was the potential winner.

            panther_1935 on March 28, 2016 at 2:35 pm
    • I am Flourishing, where did you see that? The winners name?

Audrey Wilson on March 25, 2016 at 1:04 pm
    • There is something odd about this win?_Why did the friend know that the Rennie family won on March 20th when the drawing was done on the 22th of March , and why does HgTv. have nothing to say about this leak.. _who leaked the information. Are the Rennie family a value family to someone on Hgtv or of the people involved with the raffle .. what really happened.. and why did they not do a re- due. _

Lisa on March 29, 2016 at 8:28 pm
      • People are misreading the blog posting date as the drawing date which are two different things. We've never been informed when the actual drawing took place. HGTV did send out an email on March 17th saying they had drawn a winner without saying when the drawing happened. Recent history is that any public postings seem to be delayed by days if not weeks before they're posted. The rules said drawing would occur on or about March 1st.

        dreamn_again on March 29, 2016 at 9:50 pm
  271. There is an entire post dedicated to this from when it happened.

    DH2016 on March 29, 2016 at 7:15 pm
  272. Right…an entire post with a couple sentences. Then they filmed the reveal 2 days after his death and actually state on it that they were 7 weeks behind with 3 weeks to deadline AND safety of the contractors nor quality of work was compromised. They felt so bad. Now if that isn't the biggest lie and disrespect to Jim and his family, I don't know what is. But, money talks and the show must go on.
