HGTV Urban Oasis 2016 Tour is Live

It’s finally here! HGTV Urban Oasis 2016 Tour is live, and you can see, in photos and videos, all the amazing spaces in this Craftsman-style home — the home you could win.

HGTV Urban Oasis 2016

Be sure to tour every one, but here are a handful of my favorite spaces.

1. Screened Porch: I could sit in this cozy space all day. It even overlooks the backyard’s garden and chicken coop. So much charm!

2. Kitchen:  There are some really cool appliances and a touch of glam in this stylish kitchen. I’m a big fan!

  11. Hi everyone, I sure miss the blogs… I've been trying to find out where the Smart Home is located. I know it's in North Scottsdale, but where? I would like to visit the neighborhood and take pictures. HGTV has even taken down the blog cabin link :(

    sagg99 on April 16, 2017 at 11:19 pm
  12. It's April 13 and still no new blog post?! I've entered 2 days now for the Smart Home in Arizona. Is the HGTV blog writer ill? HGTV will you please issue a statement about the lack of activity on the Dreams happen blog or redirect us?

    dooby78 on April 13, 2017 at 3:26 pm
    • Hi dooby78, there most likely won't be another blog and Lord knows when they will let us know whom won the Dream Home. When they do let us know it'll probably be on the HGTV Facebook page or the main Hgtv Dream Home page. Sure miss the good ole days on the blog! Happy Easter!

Maineblackbear on April 13, 2017 at 4:47 pm
      • where is the main hdtv dream home page? Is this not it? Thanks :0) I'm so surprised there has been no news at all! You would think someone would have seen something.

          • Just watched the ambush, what a yawn moment compared to previous years. I remember anticipating they were driving to my door any minute. Now they don't even show the ambush on HGTV anymore, how boring….I wonder if HGTV is slowing deleting home giveaways altogether? They don't even have clues for the next dream home posting anymore, I wonder if Scripps Inc. has new management/CEO?

            sagg99 on April 16, 2017 at 11:25 pm
      • Thank you, Maineblackbear. Did I miss something? Did HGTV get upset over something in the blog?

        dooby78 on April 13, 2017 at 5:48 pm
        • Only HGTV could answer that. They have a winner! Check out the link above : )

  13. Is there still a chance that they have not picked a winner yet? I'm anxious to see who won the 2017 dream home sweepstakes!! Congrats to whoever it is.

    • I have been thinking the same thing. I always enjoyed the Blog and all of the wonderful comments and speculation. It was so exciting and fun! Maybe we should just continue the tradition here regardless.?

Angela on April 3, 2017 at 10:10 pm
      • Agreed :) I've looked on Tiffany's Facebook and instagram but haven't seen any hints or clues. What other hosts usually ambush the winner? I loved the posts and pictures they used to do. It says the ambush could be until the 11th. So thats next Tuesday right? I would prefer the house without the ambush! haha

    • ABCDEFG76,

Below is a post I made on the DIY Network Blog Cabin Blog a few days ago regarding this issue. See below. Bottom line, if HGTV follows the schedule detailed in their rules, the ambush could occur any day now.

      >>>>
      nursejudyfromCA,

The below comment is from the rules sections posted on the HGTV website. As indicated the winner will be contacted as early as March 21st and as late as April 11th (Winner visits the home two to three weeks later). Hope this helps.

      >>>>>>
Sponsor anticipates that the potential Grand Prize Winner will be contacted either by phone, e-mail from the email address homepromotions@scrippsnetworks.com, in writing, or in person via an “ambush style” visit by Sponsor representatives at the Grand Prize Winner’s home or other location between March 21 and April 11, 2017

    B-Rad on December 8, 2016 at 6:52 pm
    • B-Rad,

The rules posted by HGTV state that a winner will be drawn on/about December 2, 2016 and that the winner will be listed on the HGTV website by January 3, 2017.

Therefore I feel it is very likely that the winner has been notified and is completing the necessary paperwork. I would expect HGTV to announce the winner in mid-to-late December of 2016.

  90. Those geometric tiles have got to go. Not exactly a calming atmosphere in that bathroom. Then the "on-line" fridge gets sold on ebay. Nothing like having a fridge that spies on you and makes all of it's contents available to anyone hacking into it. Why make a refrigerator so complicated? Do I really need software to keep my butter cold?

  125. While BPF did a grand job on this years Dream Home in Florida, last years Urban Oasis in Ashville, NC was so tacky that I wondered how Urban Oasis 2016 would turn out. It seems I had nothing to be concerned about. This home is another beautiful design! Overall, the decor is very tastefully done and while I agree with an earlier blogger that some brighter accents would help, I think those are personal choices that can be implemented by the winner. Everyone has varying tastes when it come to decorating and I believe that a designer who is decorating for an unknown client is showing great intelligence by sticking to more neutral colors that can be easily augmented or changed by the future tenant.

Now, about the guest bathroom… While it is not my personal taste, I can appreciate the overall concept of the decor. I do, however, have some safety concerns. As time goes by and the house settles and shifts more, how dangerous will those porcelain tiles on the ceiling become as they begin to detach and fall to the ground? Is there something I don't know that will keep their sharp corners from hitting people in the head?

Other than that one concern, I think the home and yard are magnificent! Congratulations to everyone who worked on this project.

    Gypsychild59 on September 24, 2016 at 12:39 am
    • I like most everything about this home, except that guest bathroom. I am certain I would get disoriented by seeing nothing but that tile design everywhere (even in the reflection of the mirrors while trying to get ready). I think in this instance a little would have gone a long way. I, too, worry about the upkeep of those tiles. Will they eventually fall? And, if not, how in the world will I ever get rid of them — an entire gut job?? Again, I like the tiles and think using them on one wall in the shower would have been great, just not the entire room.

Interesting article. An excerpt from Painting Tips from the Pros on Painting Bathtubs and Tile:

Depending on the surface area to be refinished and the amount of repair that’s necessary, a typical tub and tile refinishing job might cost about $1000, Pistor says.

What do you get for the price tag?

Better results. Pros are highly trained, and they have access to better materials than you can get at a big-box store. Miracle Method, for example, uses a blend of fast-drying acrylic resins that bond tightly with the tile surface. Epoxies designed for home use do not bond as strongly, so they won’t last as long — they’ll likely need touching up or redoing in a year or two. Miracle Method guarantees its results for five years, although Pistor says that a life expectancy of 15–20 years is more typical.

        • I should add, the bathroom made me motion sick at first, but I'm getting used to it. I've adjusted to the point that I would let it stand. Guests would have quite the experience! If I decided to use the age-friendly bottom suite for myself, I now think I could manage without being disoriented.

Lindingo on September 24, 2016 at 8:09 pm
        • Thanks for the info. That would definitely be cheaper than taking all the tile down. Unfortunately I have not gotten used to the tile and for me and my RA the bedroom/bathroom on the first floor would probably make more sense for me. Small issue for such a great home. Always wanted to go to Ann Arbor.

          Pam S. on October 10, 2016 at 4:39 pm
    • Yes, that bathroom would be gutted if I moved in. It's a shame but it's just too much. Lindingo, one shouldn't have to adjust to motion sickness in their own house.

Santania on September 21, 2016 at 10:33 am
    • I agree that it has some issues. Being in the cold north is number one. I also agree about the guest bedroom and bath. Between the striped ceiling and the ghastly geometric walls and ceiling of the bathroom, the guest will think he's on a bad acid trip. It's a shame that you'd have to tear all those tiles out to make it livable. I do like the room behind the garage and the kitchen.

  143. So glad to see we are still getting a blog post. Yeah!!! Thanks Virginia!!!!
The house is sweet. So much to love, especially all of the extravagant tile work and great outdoor spaces. Oh, and I have to give a big shout-out to all of the great Kohler pieces. Seriously luxe for a bungalow.
Great, very functional, and beautiful kitchen. Love it! Thank-you BPF for a single basin stainless steel sink, oh, and prep sink. And lots of storage. Yeah!
Love both the beautiful big backyard and screened porch. Amazing outdoor spaces!
I think I'd add a Mitsubishi heater/air conditioner unit ($5,000) to the garage space, seal the floor, and "viola", 400 extra feet of legal square footage.
Could use some contrasting colors in the decor. A little too much with the sage green, blues and greys. It needs more than black and white as accent colors. I'd add orange and deep yellow in the accent pillows in all of the rooms and maybe in the living room rug. I think I'd add some color to the living room by switching out the car picture with either a gallery wall or a large colorful abstract painting. Truthfully, if I were to live there, the sage green walls would have to go. A very light grey would probably be my choice. I think I'd finish out the basement with a bonus room/media room, bedroom, third bathroom, and storage area.
Overall, a really great home. Thank you HGTV.

    • So excited to have the Urban Oasis in Ann Arbor! I'm a U of M alum with a little pipe dream to go back home after decades away with only a visit per year for a game. I truly would be happy with just about anything! I have to agree, I'm not too hot on the color scheme, but I'm open to allowing things to grow on me! The detached garage is a concern in the winter and I wonder why the back entrance isn't a covered area so the trek to the garage in Winter's Ice and snow or in torrential down pours is less treacherous. I too, would finish out the basement for extra room for visitors. All in all, I would be excited to make the move! Anybody familiar with living in this neighborhood? I see it's quite close to the train station.

"And there’s a new twist this time. Ulrich said whoever wins the Ann Arbor bungalow doesn’t necessarily have to claim it. They could take a cash option instead, which would be $350,000."

Lindingo on September 20, 2016 at 8:43 pm
    • The total is $400,000 including the quicken loan cash. And usually there is a cash prize option. Once in a while like in the recent blog cabin, there is no cash prize option.

  146. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this style. Not a fan of designer's color and style, same as last year's. It's definitely masculine, although not as ugly. Now, Brian did a great job w/Florida home. Not so inviting for our family this time. I would change quite a bit.

marianne Kraft on September 20, 2016 at 8:06 pm
    • Me, too. The Craftsman Bungalow is my absolutely favorite architectural style, but I have no use for modern decor. Mid-Century Modern in particular I hate with the fiery passion of a thousand suns. I don't know why BPF would say MCM appealed to him for this house because of the college community. Just how many college students are in the market for a 2-bedroom house that costs $700,000? Maybe he means MCM style is so appealing to college students it will encourage them to enter to win. Shudder, but what do I know.

Where I disagree with you is that I generally love the colors and style choices of BPF. I'm thrilled with many of the rooms in this bungalow. I would just put the MCM pieces up for auction as quickly as possible. For people who do like that style, I think the items he chose would be very desirable.

For me, Goodbye living room sofas and hotel lamps and that chandelier. Goodbye dining room chairs–the item BPF said was probably his favorite find. I get that they are indeed lovely for MCM sensibilities, but I personally wouldn't want them in any house, let alone a Craftsman.

Lindingo on September 20, 2016 at 8:04 pm
    • I'd guess the Guest Bedroom artwork is a little wolverine, Lindingo. Most cats have more pointed ears and even if slightly rounded at the tip are narrower at the base of the ear. The wolverine has very rounded ears and wide at the base, just like the William the wolverine:

      • Oh! So adorable! Thanks, Coop. The coloring makes sense, too. It would either be a baby wolverine or a calico because of the rusty colored stomach, so wolverine seems to be it. :)

Lindingo on September 21, 2016 at 12:35 pm
      • :) :) :) Now I'll know a wolverine when I run into one. Thanks Coop

      • A wolverine looks a lot like a skunk with the stripes in the wrong place.

    • The sweepstakes information doesn't say anything about a new car so I'm hoping that a completely restored 1957 Mercury station wagon like the one hanging on the living room wall comes with this Urban Oasis. :)

      Any chance?

DesignABCs on September 20, 2016 at 9:39 pm
      • I wouldn't get your hopes up about a '57 Mercury Commuter station wagon as part of the Urban Oasis prize package, DesignABCs, but with the $50,000 cash from Quicken Loans, you could probably find one for sale to park in the UO garage.

That would be a real period art piece to check out while you're entertaining guests in the screened-in porch.

DBCoop on September 21, 2016 at 10:56 am
  149. Mmmmm. Thinking of days gone by when Urban Oasis meant dreaming of high end condos with incredible views. Not dreaming of laboring over chicken coops. Not dreaming of gardening after a long day at work. I'd rather dream of escaping to the pool than dream of cleaning up after chickens who only lay eggs for a couple of years. I prefer a beach or city scape to watch. Sorry all but this place is definitely not for me. Is the hipster craze almost over? Wake me when it is.

UOpastfan on September 20, 2016 at 4:34 pm
  150. The wolverine painting might be my favorite thing in the whole house.

Hm, maybe I would hang it in the living room over the fireplace and put a TV on the wall above the sofa. I would have to relocate the TV in some manner anyway, because they are always placed too high in the Scripps builds to be comfortable for me to watch.

    • Does it mean that BPF has already flown back down to the new Dream Home?

DesignABCs on September 20, 2016 at 9:27 pm
      • Yep, that Brian Patrick Flynn really gets around these days, from HGTV's Ann Arbor Urban Oasis to the distant Nordic island of Iceland, to HGTV's Dream Home on "The Island" in Georgia!

DBCoop on September 21, 2016 at 11:01 am
        • Could someone win both the Urban Oasis and the Dream Home? Or do the rules say you have to stop at one win forever and ever? I guess winning just one in a lifetime would be a miracle. It would sure be enough for me. :)

  152. I love the master bathroom and the powder room, each with their beautiful blue tiles.

    Beautiful wooden floor selection.

Love the craftsman style porches, both front and back.

    The backyard design is perfection.

The kitchen curtains are so perfect, I smile every time I think about them. The shimmering tile is lovely. I think I would want smaller pendants in the kitchen, though. I enjoyed the video; I could see BPF next to the pendants to understand the scale. They are big even next to him! :)

I've seen all of the videos, but I think it will take me a long time to go through all of the pictures. What a nice way to spend the day.

  153. Welcome back, VIRGINIA — you have been missed — and thank you for sharing the opening day celebrations of the Urban Oasis 2016 live tour with us here even as the blogs are winding down!

We'll look forward to more updates, news and views on the various choices of social media that will carry us into the future of prime time or anytime HGTV entertainment.

And… now that we've seen the charming Craftsman style that's so patiently waiting for the next lucky Urban Oasis winner to claim, Ann Arbor is looking more attractive than ever. ^_^

    • Wait, the blogs are winding down? Say it ain't so Coop! Just say it ain't so! I love the blogs & especially the clues to the next home location.
School may have taken up a larger swath of my time but I always come back to the blogs

tharilyn on September 26, 2016 at 2:22 pm
    • Hey Coop! Just wanted to say goodbye. I truly miss reading your comments as well as all the blogger comments, especially during the waiting period. The best to you and your family! Continue to enjoy life!

Lessie on February 24, 2017 at 8:03 pm
      • Lessie, Where is Coop. Did the blogs take a different turn?

Janzee on August 1, 2017 at 12:06 am
    • Cooper, I have finally found a snippet of the former blog. I was so excited to see you blogging for HGTV-they couldn't have found a more interesting, well rounded, traveled, researching person anywhere. Your posts allowed us to see the genuine you-always with style and grace, respectful of everyone on the blog, and offered your generous wit, and charm with all of your comments, Your pup became a signature character, and looked forward to hearing your posts about him. I hope he is doing well. Your research lured all of us, to the next best day with HGTV, and I know so many folks, myself included, that began learning about new areas of the country thanks to you. The blog was a very important part of HGTV, and am thankful for the years that all of us were part of an active community. Thank you DB Coop, if I didn't tell you a few years ago, I would like to express myself now. You continue to brighten my world, with a new found love, of finding just the right home some place in this great country.

  154. Yeah….. we have a beautifull house to blog about!! :) :) I want to see it all!!

gbfla on September 20, 2016 at 11:41 am
  155. So nice to see a blog post, since I am not on any of the social media listed above! I'm so out of touch I did not even know there was a new Urban Oasis in Ann Arbor. This is a charming house, and my favorite space is that screened-in porch. I need to check out all of the other videos and photos now. Thanks, Virginia, for remembering those of us who are less socially plugged in!

CplusE on September 20, 2016 at 11:11 am
    • I am another one only less socially plugged in!

tristinsgram on September 20, 2016 at 6:52 pm
    • I wonder if HGTV will keep the blogs open for new postings and comments or shut them down?

DesignABCs on September 20, 2016 at 9:23 pm
    • Good to see you here. I prefer this blog over the other options.
I also love the screened in porch.

      Eugenia27 on September 20, 2016 at 9:53 pm
    • Agreed, CplusE, I'd take the screened-in entertainment space any day — and the sweet little home that comes along with it.

After all, it doesn't matter whether you're plugged in, timed out, tuned up, run down or just don't get around much anymore, submitting your daily entries starting October 4 to win UO 2016 is a no-brainer, social media butterfly or not! ^_^

DBCoop on September 21, 2016 at 11:16 am
      • Too funny! You're absolutely right Coop! Patiently waiting for October 4th!

Lessie on September 30, 2016 at 4:52 am
    • CplusE, are the blogs still up, I am trying to find a way to get back to our old blogs.

Janzee on July 11, 2017 at 12:18 am
      • Janzee you are a Jewel! We just happened to see this trying to find our old blogs. Not the same anymore. If you see this please say Hi. Soney and Me from Seattle

alicesoneysmom on July 16, 2017 at 3:57 pm
        • Ali, Alice's Restaurant. It was so good to see you, and thanks for sending a greeting from Sonney. I heard from Lessie, and she might come in to Vegas with her husband some time. Is this the way, we communicate now, on the old blogs, or is there a new fresh look? Is the Coop still blogging for HGTV with his amazing style and grace?

Janzee on July 16, 2017 at 9:20 pm
          • Say Hi to Lessie what a Sweetheart! No way to communicate that we know of. Thanks Janzee. Please keep in touch

alicesoneysmom on July 31, 2017 at 9:03 pm
  156. If you're referring to my post, I just meant is this the only "HGTV" blog left. They used to have numerous blog sites, but apparently this is the only one they maintain now. And if you're really my sibling, that's great and I'd love to meet you, since I was an only child. :)
