HGTV Dream Home 2016 Winner Announcement

Congratulations to David Rennie of Shelton, Connecticut!

He is the lucky winner of a coastal retreat located in Merritt Island, Florida, a 2016 GMC Acadia Denali®, $250,000 cash prize provided by national mortgage lender Quicken Loans, and a beautiful new boat. A grand prize valued at over $1.5 million!

HGTV Dream Home 2016 Winner

David’s name was chosen from more than 127 million entries for the HGTV® Dream Home Giveaway 2016. Our lucky winner and his wife Margaret were in disbelief when host Tiffany Brooks and the HGTV production crew ambushed them at their hometown church. “It was incredible,” shares David about the ambush his daughters and minister helped plan.

David  is a proud father of two daughters and former Boy Scouts of America employee. After being diagnosed with  ESRD (End Stage Renal Disease), David received a kidney transplant in March 2015. “I thought I won the lottery with the kidney. That was life changing, but so is this. We just never thought it could get any better.”

Q&A With Interior Designer Brian Patrick Flynn

By now you’re very familiar with our talented interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn. We caught up with the designer after load-in day from our favorite waterfront property in Merritt Island. Here’s what he had to say about his design in the main living areas at HGTV Dream Home 2016.

Wake Up Inspired Every Single Day

Does that sound like a tall order? Maybe not, if you take your cues from HGTV Dream Home 2016, which was designed to keep its occupants in a vacation state of mind.

The first thing you want to do—if you can swing it—is wake up to a view like this one:

Okay, so everyone can’t have a spectacular waterfront vista outside the master bedroom window, but you can take a page from interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn’s playbook if you want to create the idea of a sweeping view in a room where there is none. In the living room, Brian had a historic photo of the home’s Merritt Island location blown up and printed on vinyl bus wrap—voila, instant wallpaper. You can do the same thing yourself at home using a custom mural or wall decal company—a soothing nature scene would be ideal for the bedroom.

What’s Your Favorite Space at HGTV Dream Home 2016?

We want to hear from you! We know you have lots of opinions about HGTV Dream Home 2016 and the thousand gorgeous design details that bring it to life—but we’re going to share our favorites with you first:

The media room gets big style points. We love that it sneaks in high-tech touches without screaming “home theater”—stylish Bose® speakers, a media console that’s an elegant piece of furniture, and a 50-inch flat-screen TV that blends in with all the curated artwork until the moment it’s needed.

HGTV Dream Home 2016 Media Room

We give interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn big props for making this space as multifunctional and modern as possible. No man-cave colors in here—he used a celery hue on the wall and accented the room with fuchsia fabrics, teal poufs, and bright, funky art. But to keep the space from overwhelming the eye, he counterbalanced all the color with a beautiful beachy linen fabric for the sofas, lamps made of driftwood and rattan, and an off-white shag rug that echoes the look of bleached coral. Perfection.

Five Design Rules for Super Bowl Sunday

The media room of HGTV Dream Home 2016 illustrates some of the cardinal rules for entertaining guests for the big game. Interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn used smart design to keep the space party-friendly and focused on a great viewing experience.

Rule #1: Nothing competes with the game. This isn’t just any game—it’s the pinnacle of the football year. Don’t distract by having other activities going on, or your diehard fans will defect. In this house, Brian was concerned that the presence of a panoramic waterfront view in the nearby great room would distract from TV-watching, so he gave the media room a sense of privacy by using frosted-glass French doors that can be closed for a more intimate experience.

Fabulous Finishes at HGTV Dream Home 2016

Great hardware can take simple cabinetry from so-so to spectacular. For HGTV Dream Home 2016, designer Brian Patrick Flynn chose hardware, fixtures, and a faucet that would make a statement, particularly in the kitchen.

“When you look at the kitchen, you immediately notice the color of the hardware,” he says. “It’s unique, not something you’ve seen a million times before.”

The cabinetry combo was chosen for a couple of reasons. The dark lower cabinets (a brown-black) give a sense of groundedness and connect to the espresso shades used in the adjoining great room, tying everything together throughout the open space. The white upper cabinets are Shaker style, which is actually a chameleon look: it can lean traditional or modern depending on the accents you choose.

Which brings us to the shiny accent pieces. To complement the timeless cabinet choices but make the overall look super-current, Brian wanted to capitalize on trends—and take them a step further. “For the past four or five years, brass has made a huge comeback in the interior design world,” he says. “A lot of interior designers use what’s called unlacquered brass, which looks like it was picked up at a flea market—it’s aged, and not very shiny.”
