If You Moved to NYC …
… and money were no object, where would you live, how would you spend your time and who would you hang with? Would you buy a sailboat and spend your summers on the Hudson or in the Hamptons? Or would you put all your money down on a sweet pad overlooking Central Park? Dream big and share your thoughts here.

I lived on Long Island for a year and went into the city often! I would love an apartment in NYC so that I could further explore all of the wonderful places offered. It is a magnificent city with people from all over the world! So much to see and so much to do. Of course, I would have to try out some of the delicious restaurants!
SOHO is my first reaction/response, although I would not balk about the upper west side…I would most definitely spend time with the friends I already have and my family, for if money was no object, my place would be big enough for them to do long visits !
I would- restaurants and fun!
This isn't just big news, it's shocking. Did anyone see this coming? I know we talked about two Dream Homes and the possibility that there could be a loft in the city and a place in the country. Wow! I realize it's a bit separate from the Dream Home giveaway, but Jack is involved, so wherever Jack goes a dream tends to follow. ; )
I think this would explain some of the clues. ; )
I would love to visit New York, and see all the sites, but it wouldn't really be practical for me to live there, however an extended visit would be marvelous.
Living on a sailboat part-time sounds exciting. Maybe that luxury car will turn into a sailboat.
wish I knew about sailing – had a friend with a saliboat& controlling it is not as easy as it looks.
Yeah, didn't a few match up all the clues to New York? Who were they?
More than one Dream Home!
Was Mary toying with us…. or what?
If not, maybe there is also a third . ^_^
Going to go look at that NY skyscraper clue again. Is this a view from the DH sweepstakes building?
I would buy a home at the highest floor of one of those outstanding buildings with stunning views – just like you see on TV. Renovated to be as sustainable as possible, of course;)
I would definitely spend majority of my time learning about the the history and culture
and the rest of my time would be spent pinching myself to be sure it's real.
I'm sure it's a completely opposite scene from Hilo but a dream for any small town girl!
Wow Mishi that is brave. That is like doing a 360 for you. You must be getting really anxious to get off your beautiful island. Isn't it funny how we always want what we don't have, for instance, I would love to spend some time in Hilo. Warm rain sounds wonderful. Sighhhhh.
Wow, this is a total surprise that jumped out and bit me on the curiosity bone. A Giveaway!!
Got my attention!! Let's see more. Got to be good if Jack T and Vern Yipp are involved!
"and money were no object"…………… I'm in DREAMING overload right now! I would need a boat captain, a maid, and all you blogger friends to help me survive this Major Jack&Vern DREAM of my lifetime contest! So much fun to even imagine!! (Got to check out the boats.)
Since I do not have any friends that live in NY city, if I won this luxury condo…I would spend my time with my future husband and with new friends that we make in the city. Also, I would love to dine out at trendy restaurants, catch a broadway play, take a walk with my dog in Central Park, attend a political benefit, or just have a quiet evening at home with the man of my dreams. If money were no object…….I'd love to own a 2nd home in the Hamptons; a place to go on the weekends to relax and get away from the commotion of NY city; and maybe invite friends and family for a weekend or holiday visit to my home in the Hamptons. I also love the outdoors……..a hike would be great, a bike ride would be fun, or maybe a day at the beach. There would have to be fitness equipment at the NY city condo and at the home in the Hamptons…..I have to get my daily exercise no matter where I live. Now….if I could just win a home!!
any play but Cats. I am allergic to real cats & not sure I want to see them on stage although I have heard it is a great play. I am a dog person & there is no play called Dogs. lol And no excuse for not going to the gym.

I can't take credit for finding this – it was RJMstone. but go to this site & click amenities then click on the media room, fitnesscenter, or terrace lounge to view – & what a view fron the terrace lounge. The Empire State building would be wonderful to see. I love the movie An Affair to Remember.
There is workout facilities in the building and in the neighborhood.
Even kyaking and canoeing!
Did I mention that I like to see movies? Another hobby of mine………I hope the condo will come furnished with a BIG wide screen television.
I think it has a big tv.
THAT IS SOME TOWER! ! ( Would love to see out a window.)
Check it out… http://www.gwathmey-siegel.com/portfolio/proj_det…
"The W New York-Downtown Hotel & Residences is a 57-story tower rising at the southern edge of New York City’s World Trade Center Memorial Site, one block from the planned Freedom Tower, at 123 Washington Street. The first luxury hotel and residential tower to be built in Lower Manhattan, it is also the first new project not part of the WTC complex to begin construction since 9/11. "
i would have to get used to the heights – it would probably be ok with a strong glass window. Did you read about Gorilla glass – don't know how eco friendly it is though. sounds tough.
I wouldn't mind rubbing shoulders with the Statue of Liberty!
http://www.starwoodhotels.com/whotels/property/ar…
Has that bank building been demolished yet, (Deuscht(spell) Bank?
Great views. I love the picture on the urban page. To own a boat would be so grand.
http://123washingtonstreet.com/site.aspx?r=0 Checking it out!! (music too)
LOVED LOVED Loved all the views out the windows!
The furnished residence that is shown looks like a luxury abode from Star Trek. Okay for some.
I see HGTV is keeping their Peek-a-Boo bathroom legacy alive here too! LOL
did you click on the terrace lounge & bar & it looked only 4-5 floors up. That would be awesome. Thank you for this link. techno music is annoying though
that wonderful site is no longer there
This is brilliant !! NYC !! I don't know the correct term for a sky-rise "pied a terre" , but this is definitely city lights delights :O) I'd spend long weekends there, go to the theatre with my husband, and visit the Met., great restaurants, shop for foods I can't find here in the countryside. New York bagels, cheeses, great deli's !! Of course, I would invite my girl friends to visit for weekends too, shopping would be such fun. Bring the children up for Christmas, see the store windows all lit up and decorated for the season, take them to Radio City ! The possibilities are endless !!
Could you see the Christmas Day Parade from there?
Starting September 1, enter for a chance to win an apartment at The Residences at W New York-Downtown.
I almost forgot…….I love to travel around the globe. Traveling at least once per year would be great! Maybe to Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, Mexico, South America, Canada, Hawaii, the Carribean, the Grand Canyon, etc., etc., etc. That would definitely be something I would like to do…if money were no object.
I, personally, am a bonafide country girl and would only love to go to New York to see the sights and experience the eating and shopping. However, I know that there are many many of you who would love to live and work in NYC, so I say "Thank You" to HDTV for listening to the comments of the bloggers (and whoever else had any input ) while making dreams come true for some lucky person, We all have such different tastes and HGTV seems to know what they are. Thanks again HGTV!!
Another fun thing to do in the city is to attend a sporting event…..maybe the NY Yankees, NY Mets, and whatever the Pro-Basketball team is in NY. I enjoy going to sporting events.
Don't forget tennis- The US Open!
HGTV: I remember posting a while back about a dual Dream Home. A unit in NYC and a residence in up-state NY. (That was before the VT location was revealed).
I can't forget walking along that fence with the notes and pictures and flowers in memorial of the lives lost on 9/11.
Tears were streaming down my face as I thought "what can be built here"? Well, thank you HGTV, and all the other NYC planners for the W New York Downtown Hotel & Residences. I love the space!
I hope the condo has lots of BIG windows…….I love a room with a million dollar view. When I have the chance…..I enjoy quiet time to read a good book. A comfy couch would be great when reading a book or when watching a movie. I also love a fireplace, warm and toasty, in the winter months.
Did someone mention NY Bagels? I need to get my bagel fix each morning……I hope there is a bagel shop near the condo…….I will store them in my freezer by the dozen.
I'd like a high floor apartment on Central Park West with a view of the park and the midtown skyline, plus a country home in Roxbury, CT. On a more moderate budget, I'd settle for a little apartment on Riverside Dr. and a cabin in the Catskill Mountains. For an entry level NYC budget, give me a discounted condo in Williamsburg, Brooklyn–that place, while nice today, will be even more fabulous in 10-15 years–ah to dream.
I'll agree, and go with 41 Central Park West—a nice enough address, and with a view of Central Park of course. Living in NYC would only work for me if I had plenty of green, open space to wander through…at least in the warmer weather months. Come winter, I'd be elsewhere, back to S California, or off to Hawaii, Costa Rica, or one of my favorites (it almost goes without saying), Thailand.
OMG is this too fabulous or what! It would take a dream wallet to live there. I have a relative there an we could do all the wonderful things together. It's such a fantasy place and melting pot of the world.
I for one have been planning to relocate from Houston to NYC area within the last quarter or the first of 2011. If my family is chosen to be the lucky winners of this pad in Manhattan… I wont even need to find another JOB, my employer's headquarters is literally around the corner from there, but on a serious note good luck to all and keep the comments positive and remember you shall give to receive.
Okay, now…I know I've been a little out of touch lately, mostly due to my oldest son getting married in Charleston this past weekend, but WOW, WOW, and WOW! HGTV…you outdid yourselves right before our very eyes! JACK…I don't even know what to say! Oh, you…you ARE the Dream Man!
MARY…How do you do it? Keeping all of those secrets tucked away and then…BOOM…a giant SURPRISE for all of us bloggers! One of these days I want to have some cosmos with you and see if I can get more secrets out of you! ^_^
Anyway, I am a little speechless (which is pretty hard to do to this HGTV SuperFan)!
Thank you HGTV, once again, for making all of our dreams come true! You may "start at home" but you certainly "end with a bang" each and every time! HGTV…YOU'RE the BEST!
Living the Dream!
I couldn't believe my eyes when I just happened to check in to the HGTV site. I was the one SO wanting the Albuquerque Dream home all through the first 3 months of the year. I even cancelled a trip to Hong Kong in the hope I would be here when HGTV came knocking at the door! This is because my husband moved to Hawaii for my sake and doesn't like it at all. His other job offer had been at a college in NYC. He SO regrets not having taken that job– as there is no music and theatre or anything here in Hawaii. What would I do if I won a condo in N.Y.? I'd go to the opera, theatre– but most of all, I'd write my books, try to find agents, go to the NY film academy and see if I can make my movie— Ooh all my dreams would come true! I have to say that entering the HGTV sweepstakes certianly helped me get through the 2nd cancer– giving me hope everyday that something good would happen. Maybe entering this sweepstake every day will help me keep my hopes up too!
i was in love with the Albuqueque home too. not too far from my kids. needed a pool but had lots of room for one. that turquoise tile fireplace was (I can't find a word). but the way the backdraft on the stove at the green home came up out of the back of the burners – I had never seen that b4 & didn't even know it existed. the Tyler home had the boathouse & pool & room for all my books.. there are pieces of all the homes that I want some of it. OH & the mirrors in the green home with the Stars at the top – now that is my style being from the Lone Star State. I have a coat rack with stars like that I got from a vendor at a car show. It would have looked great in that bath as a towel rack. I had plans & need to quit dreaming – seems sinful to not be grateful for what I have when others have so little & have so many problems.
joplays, I think I replied already but LWOP is Leave without Pay. Hawaii is hard– as I kept posting in the beginning of the year– expensive, rainy– hard to get around from. But I'm learning to appreciate it and appreciate the beauty of the place
So this would be a chance to make it up to my dear husband. At least he would have a home in NYC– though the old question of taxes comes up again! WHO can afford the taxes on NYC condo? But I am now hoping, praying, visualizing that I can sell a book and have this home to live in! I felt SO let down when I didn't win the Albq. house– 'cause I had NM. calling me and I still have my job in N.M. from which I'm on LWOP! So I was SO hoping for that home– but now here is a chance to make it up to my husband– if I can give him a home in N.Y. Poor thing, he is SO dejected and feels SO stuck out in Hawaii… Oh Dear God, can you make this happen?
LWOP? Is there some place an older lady can find what these abbreviations mean? ur in Hawaii & don't like it?
Wow a dream come true an apartment in the big apple! I can't wait until september 1st. !!!!!
If money wasn't an object and I moved to New York, which I will some day soon I hope, I would live in Manhattan anywhere (in a brownstone near Central Park or overlooking the Hudson or East River., in an apartment with enough space for my books and a view); I think I could be comfortable anywhere. I would be able to write all day every day without being interrupted by a day job… I'd hang out with other playwrights and artists. I'd take dance lessons for exercise. I'd go to the museum several times a month. I'd have a favorite seat in the New York library and would use it often. And when I am interviewed about my latest play opening in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, next to my name will be written, the playwright lives in Manhattan. I would have a farm in upstate New York so I could stay close to the theater but still have some grass and space sometimes… I would be a happy camper.
now that is a deluxe tree house. was hoping for a pool in the basement – my favorite form of exercise is swimming & not sure that fancy is my style.
Mary, you have been busy! We were getting so impatient on the Dream Home/ Green Home blogs and all along you've been making preparation to give us something new to talk about! Thank you HGTV for this new opportunity to win a great Urban Oasis in NY!
Chad, maybe you could simplify our blogging by giving us tabs from one blog to another!
I live here now! In fact, in the neighborhood of the W – and my husband is a firefighter at Ground Zero a few blocks away, so I'm so happy you're shining a bit of a spotlight on the hard-hit area (post-9/11) down here. Of course, we don't live in a 30th floor hi-rise. We live in a studio apartment in a walk-up building, we scrounge for money to pay our absurd rent, and sacrifice a lot of the comforts I had and loved growing up in Missouri. But–we love every minute of NYC life. It was always my dream to live in the Big Apple, I wrote in a highschool diary my 10-year goal and it was "Live in NYC, work in advertising, live in a big loft downtown." (two out of three ain't bad!)
Of course, every New Yorker (barring the billionaires) daydream about what fun they could have with all this city has to offer if you didn't have the job and financial responsibilities tying you down. One day I took off work to go to the Opera in the middle of the day-and everyone there looked like they didn't have a care in the world. These are the things I'd do more. I'd have an apartment in the West Village, I'd have long leisurely lunches, hit art galleries, go to more shows, really get to know the museums, volunteer more, get more active in the local politics.
(cont!) Since my husbands schedule is always so sporatic, he has off during days I'm at work, so it'd be nice to spend more time with him. And go to movies on a Tuesday afternoon on a whim. Start Happy Hour at 4! Try all of those restauarants that we could never afford. There's just so much. I moved here with a list a mile long of things I had to do in New York before I moved away-but now that we're not moving away, it seems I've lost track of the excitement of first being here–I would get back to that. I'd pull out my list and get back to everything New York has to offer. You could wake up every morning here with the intent of doing something new that day, and live for decades doing it.
I love this city, I love the diversity and the noise and the chaos, and meeting the most amazing people and seeing the most amazing things, and always feeling like you're on a tight rope hovering between sanity and total craziness. But what I love the most is how at the end of the day you can close all that out behind your apartment door, sit on your couch with your husband and dog, watch TV and be just like anyone else sitting on their couch every night too–anywhere in the world.
Hi everybloggie,
Well, if money were no object…I'd splurge on a dinner party with a difference. In my new Urban Oasis in NYC, I'd hire a personal chef for the day and invite interesting celebrities. My guest list would include Linda Woodrum, Jack Thomasson, Vern Yip, Tim Gunn, A.J. Jacobs, Dan Brown, Bill Bryson, Dave Barry, and their guest partners. lol
Hi everybloggie,
..and just for whimsy, I'd call " Butler 911 " so that Jeeves could open the door and take their coats :O) lol
If money wasn't an issue…………………. some may choose to be sealed up in those $10 million tin cans. Do't look to bad.
(To protect yourself against bombs, germs, tsunami, asteroids, etc. ) Used to belong to military.
(Timeshare for $50,000 per adult.)

Doomsay shelters upgraded! :S
I watched that & if it is my time to go God knows best. I am not gonna turn into a gopher & go underground. But did you watch the video about the Heiress recluse Huguette Clark – that was interesting.
you always come up with interesting stuff to look at or watch. wish I was a good webber or whatever.
I will feel NYC and having a good time there with my family. I never been there and hope one time my family and I will stay there if we win.
Ohhhhhhh… how I LOVE NYC! I lived there for 21 years (upper East Side) and then a job brought me to California. How I miss NY! I lived the NY lifestyle… hung out at Elaine's on 2nd Ave, had friends everywhere! I moved to CA just before 9/11, and haven't been back since (I used to work at the World Trade Center).
It's really funny, even though I lived there so many years, I never saw the 'tourist' things, like going to the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, etc.
There is nothing like NYC! I love it still, and miss it so… and the food! Asian, Indian, Middle Eastern, Little Italy, Chinatown, bagels with a shmear, and PIZZA!! The best in the world!
Okay, got it! I'm moving to NYC, flush with cash, AND I'm the winner of HGTV's breathtaking urban residence? Well, take that spotlight off of me right away and shine it directly onto a most deserving, up-and-coming, innovative artist in one of several of the liberal arts.
You can't talk about NYC without thinking of the line from the song "if I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere…" So, since it's up to you (and me) to make a brand new start of it, as they say, why not endeavour to give young, potential stars with talent, drive, and determination the means to do just that—to live their dreams—and in turn, provide inspiration to yet another generation.
I'll set up a non-profit—let's say, The Rising Star Foundation—and use The Residences at W New York-Downtown as the setting. Aspiring and outstanding artists in many categories, including artists in all medium, writers/poets, chefs, interior designers, fashion designers, green design innovators—would be showcased at a celebratory "meet and greet" party hosted at The Residences at W. The midday events would begin in the fourth floor meeting rooms (where the selected artists "work" would be on display in some fashion), along with cocktails and live music out on the fifth floor terrace lounge, followed by champagne and hors d'hoeuvre in my 33rd floor HGTV Urban Oasis residence—with plenty of time to fully appreciate the beautiful views and designer Vern Yip's inspired furnishings.
I could certainly keep myself busy putting together these functions every three months, where top names from one of the various liberal art fields being honored would be on hand along with the lucky artist, who, in addition to the media coverage, would also receive a $25,000 scholarship award AND a week's stay in the Urban Oasis posh pad plus $1,500 in cash for expenses. The HGTV Dream Sweepstakes, with its posh pads, cash, and cars does have their perks—so it's up to me to get my daily entries in, and then let the fun begin!
DBCoop, that's a great plan. All artists can use some assistance getting started, and there is no better place for a young artist to test their talents than NYC.
If money were no object I would like a brownstone in the theater district. I've passed many with an adorable wrought iron fence enclosing a tiny plot of a tree or flowers. I'd have a limo available at all times to take me uptown or downtown, where I would get out and walk. I once walked so much I came back to my hotel and washed out my hose only to find out the next morning the feet of my hose were completely shredded. I would have the best seats in the house of any Broadway production I wanted to see. And I would eat in every celebrity chef's restaurant and order the most expensive things on the menu. Unless I had spent the day eating at a museum's cafe or a street vendor's offering.
Somehow I feel this will be the last post on this thread. Going over to the W now.
Oh, NO! I am not going to get suckered in on this one, again… So goes winning the New Mexico dream. I could buy there now on my own nickle. Not New York! It is a must for any artist though. It could be the fast track to worldwide success. But NO! NO! NO! I do not believe I will be an HGTV dreamer anymore. I would just enter and if it happens let me know. WHAT A SHOCK! Or I'll just visit by media invitation. Always my luck came from hard work, imagination, luck, prayer, and alien visitation. After 20 something years of selling hundreds of thousands of handmade dolls and their stories, I'm tired. I am compiling 3 doll lines into books and their history for licensing. Not to mention my paintings I am beginning again since Katrina. NYC is a must location to kick off any product. I'm READY for NY. The world needs to know of these spaced-out creations in neon colors and mind-boggling designs, linked to prehistorc visits from space!!!!!
OK! I refuse to be a dreamer but I could imagine myself someday living in a loft above my own gallery in NYC. Immediately, I would be visiting the talk show circuit for publicity. Then it would be off to check out some licensing companies and educate myself. First I would have to know the best and most unique little restaurants. New Orleans is quite hard to beat on unique cuisine! I live on shrimp and lobster. It would take some time, but checking out the art galleries is a must. But I would spend my time getting to know about the opera, ballet, and plays. I could love NY, However I still have to visit New Orleans, Los Angeles, and Santa Fe, museums where I would also have works on display. Then I would just die, because life is too short!
Who would you hang with in NYC? I am a recluse artist. In my years I have had access to the super rich, super talented, super intellegent over achievers. But I don't "hang" with anyone because I am always designing, creating, producing, selling, and painting. Most likely I would share NY experiences with another artist, or a mind-blowing intellectual person from whom I can learn something new. People who are producers, licensers, marketing and media, and manufactures would be interesting to know. I KNOW! NY is full of famous people- not my thing- unless they want to buy my art? Some have. But Opra would be the only one who could "instantaneously" get my books, dolls and paintings into mega success. Now I would hang with her and learn something! Where is her new station located? Guess everyone will have to come to me in my new NY location! Dream On? NO! Plan On………..
What a wonderful surprise. I have always dreamed of going to NY but to be able to live there wow. Can't wait for the special on HGTV. So many questions, but must wait for the input from Mary. imohl would make a great winner, but maybe she would let us visit.
We moved back to Michigan from NYC because it was hard financially with a child. If money were no object we'd move to the upper west side in a townhouse. It'd be nice to reconnect with friends and enjoy the culture. I would love to raise "city kids". Our summer home would still be in Michigan though…sorry Hamptons, Michigan summers are the best.:)
Ohhh, would love something overlooking Central Park (but not too high up)…and I would paint and paint and paint…then visit all the sights in between…and the restaurants…and the theatres…and the galleries…
I lived in NY, but I moved and it was depressing. SoHo is wonderful! I'm an undergrad at this moment and will start Grad school really soon! and that apartment would be PERFECT! I can't wait!
I am very pleased with an urban give away however HGTV just will not bring anything to the Mid West like Chicago for example. East coast, West coast, Southwest but never the Mid West what are we chopped liver? We buy and build in the Mid West you know.
chopped liver might be big in NYC!
Taking a clue from the sailboat suggestion (thank you, MARY), and expounded upon so eloquently by Cami, in a "money's no object" frame of mind, I'm going with the HGTV Urban Oasis on land, and this posh pad at sea—the Gimla 140' Yacht…and name it what else but Coop's Sloop! http://www.sailur.com/gimla-gimla-140-of-madness/
MARY, or Site Admin, could we get "the lastest comments" sidebar activated for the Urban Oasis blog pages? Without them, it's much more difficult to follow the recent comments posted on the various Urban Oasis threads, and we lose the momentum of the blog. I don't want to miss out on any of the Urban Oasis excitement!
