Small Space Design: Rethink Your Closet With Hafele

We all could use more closet space. But for the average Manhattanite, it’s not unusual to live in an apartment the size of someone’s walk-in closet. In this video, I talk with “right-sizing” design expert Gale Steves in the Hafele showroom about a new way to configure your closet to maximize space. If you haven’t heard of Hafele, check it out. The German hardware technology manufacturer offers some very innovative solutions for organization and design.

  1. That's an interesting closet system that pulls out on wheels.
In a week we can start entering for the urban oasis….

  2. I wonder how hard it would be to pull out when it is full of coats and "stuff". I do like the idea though.

  3. That is a nice system. Are any of the Urban Oasis closets done like this? Can we get a full few to see how much storage there is in the four closets?

  4. Great Idea for closet space. I'm ready for the sweeps to begin !!!

  5. Not too sure what the advantages are to this style. It would still take up the same amount of floor space. Just use a little less wall space. If one's square footage is limited what's the difference?? I does look nice though.

    • Eddie, George, it's Jane of the Jungle coming in for a landing. I couldn't get to your comment under Anne AliseSouth, the web critters have moved the comments. I wanted to tell you that Jane Jetson wore an apron I think, That part of the cartoon series was not familar to me nor did her weekly beauty appointment. But I really dug the boulder on her fingers.

  6. It would be so much easier to see your clothes since my closet is not a walkin. Old style try to see what is around the corner one way or the other. I have thought about opening up the walls on both sides & putting doors – just hate to lose that wall space. So now you have me trying to figure out how one of those would work in my house. lol

  7. Hello everybloggie,

That's an innovative closet design, roll-in-roll-out …Hmmm…perhaps I could put my husband in the " roll away" when he's snoring ? Lol :O)

GoldieLocksBear on August 26, 2010 at 12:24 am
  8. With Gail's suggestion, I would think that Vern's closest space in the bedroom has at least an additional roll out closet. Great design!!!! As we begin to talk about rightsizing, you look at your wardrobe and wonder, how many of the same sweaters with slight variations can you have. The garage sales you'd have before moving to the city would be fantastic, and then take the entire family out to a great dinner before going to the big apple.

    • Apropos of an evening out for dinner, Janzee, and some cultural entertainment, whether in NYC or your hometown, just a little suggestion: I was privileged to be invited recently by friends to a premiere showing of the newly released film 'Mao's Last Dancer'. Although it is only beginning limited engagements in the US now, if you have an opportunity to see it, it is a MUST SEE. I won't belabour the point any further.

Now, back to great design with H'A'FELE and the HGTV Urban Oasis.

      • Dearest Coop, Thank you for one of the best gifts I have ever received. There is such celebration of freedom, homeland, love or art, and an intense survival instinct. Chi Cao is an amazing actor, with fine credits. I feel more films like this will encourage peace and just emailed Phyllis Bishop at pbscreenings@gmail.com, to see if this is available in LA next week. From the first moment of the breathe of the first scene, I knew that the stroy was very powerful. Thank you!!!! I think it's very important to support films like this and the art of Stephen Wiltshire. Although I haven't seen the film yet, I feel there is an unusual parallel.

        • You're so very welcome, Janzee. Like you, I sincerely hope this powerful and compelling film, Mao's Last Dancer, can be seen in every small town and large city across America—from Portland to Plymouth, and Galveston to Grand Forks.

DBCoop on August 28, 2010 at 11:02 am
          • Coop, I just had a wild thought. Did you produce Mao's Last Dancer, or have any part of the production? It's not the usual film, and just wondered…

  9. I wasn't familiar with the German company H'A'FELE until a few years ago when I was choosing kitchen appliances for the condo in Thailand. They're very big there, and offer a range of appliances, kitchen and closet storage ideas, along with other household building products. It's all very contemporary, of the highest quality, and very European, so of course they're experts in making the best use of small spaces.

Since their appliance products are 220v, I don't think H'A'FELE imports them to the USA. But for kitchen cabinetry and storage ideas, they're brilliant. I'm glad to see them bringing their expertise into the US, where smart downsizing still has a long way to go.

  10. I was hoping that there was a little more suggestion to it as I am reorganizing all of our stuff right now.

  11. HGTV for the $1400 – $1500 maintenance fees per month – what do you get – what does it cover? is that insurance if someone breaks in – appliances fixed – what?

joplays on August 26, 2010 at 8:34 pm
    • Your very own butler maybe???? ….haha just kidding. I don't know Joplays but that is a lot of $$$.

      Zoie1361 on August 27, 2010 at 10:15 am
    • Since it is NYC that is probably enough to cover your daily elevator ride and a security guard at the front entry!

EdinOregon on August 27, 2010 at 2:25 pm
    • I 'd assume that in NYC, as elsewhere, as GoldieLocksBear commented, maintenance fees cover common areas, including all exterior building maintenance, along with the residents' rooftop terrace and the dedicated lounge/business/meeting area. Even some utilities may be included, such as trash or water, but rarely electric or gas. Property/casualty insurance on the building would almost certainly be included. However, anything to do with the interior of the unit itself, that is, repairs and general upkeep, insurance for contents and personal liability, is the unit owners responsibility. Damage to an individual unit due to building defects, such as water from an outside source for example, is normally covered by maintenance fees. However, worry not, until your name is randomly selected by the computer as winner of the Urban Oasis, and ALL will be revealed to your complete satisfaction. Until then, keep the dream alive, and don't let anybody rain on your parade. Remember, only you can prevent negative nabobs.

    • I would think it covers security, as in a dooman, state of the art survellience etc. Snow removal, cleaning, and maintainance of common areas, the first class amenities such as gym, meeting room etc. Generally keeping this first-class building sparkling clean, updated, and state of the art at all times.
I think that In a lot of buildings, when first built. everything is state of the art, but to keep it in first class condition requires diligence, and a lot of money.

AnneEliseSouth on August 29, 2010 at 9:52 am
  12. Hi everybloggie,
I would assume the monthly maintenance fee is to cover the upkeep of the common areas, the foyer, elevator, work-out room, concierge / doorman, etc.

    happy weekend everyone :O)

  13. I had no idea, but there's actually an online order center for Hafele USA. See something you like? Price it, order online, and it's at your door in no time. How convenient! http://www.hafele.com/us/services/4106.asp

  14. Hafele…Finding Better Ways! That's their slogan so…Start at Home and Finding Better Ways go hand-in-hand, right? It shouldn't surprise any of us that HGTV has hooked up with Hafele..their Finding Better Ways to Start at Home!

Thanks for the tips my HGTV execs!

  16. Even if I win the contest, I guarantee my girlfriend will invade ever closet in the apartment!
We'll have to call Vern back to help!

ChristopherNYC on September 14, 2010 at 8:30 pm
  17. That is an awesome closet. Say goodbye to having to rummage through a closet without being able to see anything. This solves that issue as you pull it out and everything is in plain view. Turn on the room lights and you can see everything even better! Quite clever!

  18. Can anyone PLEASE tell me where I can get that grey sofa?? I absolutely love it and it's exactly what I need for my tiny living room space.

  19. Very interesting system, perhaps it can even help to get rid of the mess . Out of curiosity I examined other Hafele company products, all are useful, modern and worth of having
