A Visit to Buck House

Designing for a small space is all about dual function. For HGTV’s Urban Oasis apartment, Vern Yip found a circa-1970s glass and chrome bar cart that doubles as a chic end table. He bought the piece at Buck House, a Manhattan boutique that offers a unique collection of antique furniture and art from around the world. In this video, owner Deborah Buck gives us a tour of the store at 1318 Madison Avenue and shares her philosophy to interior design.

Hafele: Making Kitchen Cabinets More Accessible

When you have a small kitchen like most Manhattanites, the kitchen cabinets you have are even more valuable. Rather than rely on standard shelves, look for shelving systems that make your cabinets more functional. Treasures from Aperture Gallery

The book you choose for your coffee table says a lot about you. Renowned designer Vern Yip chose a number of great books for HGTV’s Urban Oasis apartment, including a few selections from the Aperture Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing photography through its popular Aperture magazine, books, exhibitions and educational programs. Studio Chic: Designing an Invisible Bedroom

In Manhattan, a 400-square-foot condo will cost you about $400,000, depending on the neighborhood. As you can imagine, that’s not very much space for the money. But when you live in New York, you’re here to enjoy the city, not the apartment. Still, that doesn’t mean Manhattanites should suffer in cramped living spaces. We get creative.

That 400-square-foot condo is likely a studio or efficiency, so technically you don’t have a room for your bed, which ends up taking up most of the floor space. In this video, I talk with “right-sizing” design expert Gale Steves in the Hafele showroom about designing an invisible bedroom to maximize the space in a tiny apartment.

We all could use more closet space. But for the average Manhattanite, it’s not unusual to live in an apartment the size of someone’s walk-in closet.
